Be seen: I would be seen. An exam and appropriate studies will usually determine the cause. Ligamentous injuries, such as an injury to the ACL can cause an unstable knee. If you are having a lot of trouble with pain running down your leg, it could also be coming from your back. In severe cases pinched nerves in the back can cause weakness in the muscles around the knee making it less stable. ...Read more

30% of left medial meniscus removed july 8. Limp and have pain there, back, front, and outside of knee. Is this caused by lack of meniscus?

Joint overload pain: Once part of the meniscus is removed due to a tear, the involved joint space can suffer from overloading. With loss of the shock absorbing effect of the meniscus, Cartilage and subchondral bone can begin to "feel the pain". Arthritis, breakdown of the cartilage, can lead to further joint space narrowing and also increase symptoms of pain. Discuss with your surgeon now that postop pain is chronic. ...Read more

Why is the back of the knee so much more painful than the front after total knee replacment? Mine done 2 wk ago and very painful stiff

Surgical procedure: The knee structures have numerous nerve endings. Some of those structures are surgically removed during a total knee (meniscii, ligaments, bone, capsule). Pain is a result of the surgical removal, the resulting bleeding, and swelling that occur. It is generally felt in the area of damage and resolves as healing progresses. Stretching the inflamed structures also can cause pain in the back. ...Read more

I fell and slammed my knee into the door frame. The next day the dogs ran into it both from the front and back. That same day I tripped and landed on it. It hurts to bend or extend. I also have trouble putting pressure on it. What should I do?

Its time for: An xray (Standard films to rule out a hairline fracture (Some would order a "sunrise view" to study the knee cap. The running into the FRONT is more "disturbing" since it causes a "hyperextension" type injury with trauma to the ACL (a ligament which is MAJOR in STABILIZING your knee joint! An MRI may be indicated (If your knee is not swollen the ACL injury is unlikely) Hope this helps Dr Z ...Read more
