Somewhat difficult: To imagine what might be causing episodic swelling of the neck. Possibilities might include salivary gland swelling or angioedema. Lymph node swelling or enlargement wouldn't be expected to be transitory. You may be right. ..: .. that the pain is near your thyroid. Or it may be something else in your neck. Thyroiditis, or inflammation of the thyroid, is the major cause of thyroid pain. Swelling can be another symptom. OR you may have some muscular pain. Salivary gland: The pain makes it less likely to be lymphoma. Most lymphomas cause rubbery, enlarged and painless lymph nodes. The fact that this occurred suddenly makes me wonder if he has an obstructed salivary gland which can be very painful and cause swelling in the area you describe, and antibiotics don't help.
