Oxytocin use in office setting ok?

Oxytocin: Oxytocin is a powerful hormone. When we hug or kiss a loved one, oxytocin levels drive up. It also acts as a neurotransmitter in the brain. In fact, the hormone plays a huge role in pair bonding. Prairie voles, one of nature's most monogamous species, produce oxytocin in spades. This hormone is also greatly stimulated during sex, birth, breast feeding, and the list goes on. ...Read more

What is an oxytocin challenge test?

Fetal statuss check: A oxytocin challenge test(oct) involves giving a pregnant mother the drug to stimulate at least 3 contractions in a 10 minute interval to check whether the fetal heart rate accelerates(reassuring) or declines. It allows the OB md to check on the fetal status especially when there are concerns about the baby's wellbeing. ...Read more

Effectiveness of cervadil vs pitocin (oxytocin) induction?

Effectiveness of cervadil vs pitocin (oxytocin) induction?

Depends on cervix: Before induction your current cervical exam is used as a determinant for which mode of induction. Cervidil is most likely used when the cervix is less soft, dilated, and effaced (thinned out), and more posterior, as it increases prostaglandins release to stimulate dilation, thinning and softening. Those who are already dilated and effaced benefit more from pitocin (oxytocin). ...Read more

Can you tell me about being induced with gel then pitocin (oxytocin)?

Cervical Ripening: The purpose of the gel is to prepare the cervix to dilate. It makes the cervix softer and sometimes causes slight dilation. The pitocin (oxytocin) gives you the contractions of real labor. This combination is a good way to induce labor if your body is ready or there is a medical need for induction. Best wishes! ...Read more

What are the side effects of oxytocin if given to female as buccal pitocin?

What are the side effects of oxytocin if given to female as buccal pitocin?

Who uses buccal pit?: The discussion of the risks and proper use of pitotcin is a long one. Suffice it to say the use of buccal pitotcin to induce/augment labor involves all the usual risks of pitotcin in addition to the fact that buccal pitotcin is absorbed and dispersed in a less controlled fashion than iv. I am curious where and when buccal pitotcin is being used. ...Read more

Why, when gals don' feel 'cuddly', or can't stand being in the room w/ their baby (as on the doctors tv show) are they not prescribed oxytocin? Ali

Why, when gals don' feel 'cuddly', or can't stand being in the room w/ their baby (as on the doctors tv show) are they not prescribed oxytocin? Ali

Good thought: Synthetic oxytocin, pitocin, is only used intravenously to help with labor. The new mom should be making plenty of her own oxytocin. Being a new mom, and not getting enough sleep, can make it difficult to bond with a baby at first. This will come with time. If her feelings are intense, and do not improve, she should be seen by her doctor to see if she has postpartum depression. ...Read more

Can pitocin (oxytocin) produce a bad reaction?

Can pitocin (oxytocin) produce a bad reaction?

Generally safe: Pitocin (oxytocin) can make you contract too much. To prevent this, usually it is started at a low dose and increased slowly until the contractions are close enough together to open the cervix. Not everyone needs Pitocin (oxytocin) in labor. It is used when the contractions a woman is having on her own are not opening the cervix. ...Read more

Is it possible to get oxytocin from a natural source?

Is it possible to get oxytocin from a natural source?

No.: Oxytocin is produced in the pituitary gland. Recovering hormones from humans (or animals) is associated w/ many risks. So there is no good reason to attempt to extract from living or dead persons/animals. To my knowledge, this is not being done anywhere. Oxytocin is a relatively easy protein made in the lab w/ the identical Amino Acid sequence found naturally in human beings -& it works perfectly. ...Read more

Are there disorders that are caused by hyper secretion of oxytocin?

Hyper-oxytocinemia? : Oxytocin is 1 of 8 hormones released by the pituitary gland, which is divided into the anterior & posterior lobes. Posterior lobe secretes oxytocin & adh (vasopressin). Main actions: aid w/ uterine contraction during labor & w/ release of breast milk. Excess can cause harder uterine contractions & stress the fetus. Hyper secretion in non-pregnant /non-nursing female is rare & need endocrinology consultation. ...Read more

Does oxytocin help with autism?

Does oxytocin help with autism?

It's promising: Oxytocin has potentially beneficial effects that are causing us to work further on assessing its value. There is enough info to suggest it plays a role in helping people "bond"/relate & also in decreasing anxiety. I've just begun using it with specific fda authorization in our autistic patients. We'll have more info soon. Limitations include short half-life & the overly dilute nasal spray. ...Read more

Why isnt oxytocin available for those with lactation problem?

Why isnt oxytocin available for those with lactation problem?

It is dangerous: Oxytocin is used to augment labor, and is also the hormone that is involved in let-down in a lactating woman. It does not really increase milk supply as much as it allows the milk to release. It is only used in labor under very careful monitoring because it can drop someone's blood pressure. Fenugreek, metaclopromide, and pumping are better options to increase supply. ...Read more
