Oxygen (Definition)

Oxygen is a gas that the cells in your body need to work properly. The air we breathe normally has 21% oxygen. A maximum of 100% oxygen can be given. Babies with heart or lung problems may need ...Read more

What does "oxygen saturation of hemoglobin" mean?

What does "oxygen saturation of hemoglobin" mean?

Oxygen Saturation: Red blood cells contain protein called Hemoglobin. Most of the oxygen in the body is attached to the hemoglobin. Oxygen saturation refers to proportion of red blood cells whose hemoglobin is bound to oxygen. It can be measure by pulse oximetry or by sampling blood from an artery. ...Read more

Does bronchiolitis cause low oxygen saturation?

Does bronchiolitis cause low oxygen saturation?

It happends: Bronchiolitis causes a build up of secretions in the tiny airways and blocks transfer of oxygen into the tissues. It can and does cause a drop in blood oxygen in many cases. ...Read more

Is hyperbaric oxygen therapy raise blood pressure?

Is hyperbaric oxygen therapy raise blood pressure?

Usually Not: Hyperbaric oxygen does not usually raise ones blood pressure. If your blood pressure is above normal than it is usually due to some other condition. See your family physician to discuss this. ...Read more

Is blood oxygen level 93 ok?

It depends: If you live at sea level, and the pulse oximetry machine if functioning normally, your arterial oxygen saturation should be higher than 93%. If you live at high altitude, the partial pressure of oxygen in the air is lower and, depending on how high you are, an oxygen saturation level of 93% may be normal. ...Read more

For blood oxygen saturation level - what is the fatal and normal range?

Oxygen sat curve: If you look at the p50 or oxygen saturation curve, anything above 90% is ok for the hemoglobin to unload as it gets into the tissues and supply them. As the curve goes down to 75% about pao2 of 45, this nears the saturation in the veins where unloading of oxygen to the tissues including heart muscles becomes difficult and there will be eventual death as it gets lower than that. ...Read more

Possible: A reduced DLCO/Va points to damage or scarring in the lung tissue and emphysema (especially if you have been a smoker) or other interstitial lung diseases may be the cause. The normal lung function however is not compatible with COPD but then I don't understand what you meant by hyperinflation in the presence of normal lung function test. See a pulmonologist. ...Read more

Are oxygen saturation levels lower in the elderly?

Not necessarily: As we age, it may get a little harder for the oxygen to get into the blood through your lungs. But, as long as you have healthy lungs, the oxygen saturation levels can be normal well into one's 80s or 90s. ...Read more

Is lung capacity at 53% dangerous?

Is lung capacity at 53% dangerous?

Need to find out why: During a pulmonary function test, there are typically three measurements taken. First, how well the air "moves" in and out of the lungs. Copd, asthma, bronchitis, etc are things that would cause it to drop. Second, the efficiency of oxygen transfer is measured, the diffusion. Last, the lung sizes are measured. Again, which value is down and why its down is the most important thing to find. ...Read more

Are finger oxygen meters accurate?

Are finger oxygen meters accurate?

Fairly accurate: They are fairly accurate for most people for most purposes. Not all finger oxygen saturation meters are the same. They don't all come from the same manufacturer. Oxygen saturation meters that are "medical grade" probably can claim a higher degree of accuracy, but in real life situations, it isn't clear what that would mean. ...Read more
