I take oxycodone daily for back pain. Can I take a ssri in addition for anxiety/insomnia? The oxy might help with early side effects ssri's have to.

Antidepressants: Are becoming a mainstay in the treatment of many chronic pain conditions, even when depression is not recognized as a factor. Low back pain is one of the many conditions. Mechanism not fully understood. May increase neurotransmitters in the spinal cord that reduce pain signals. They don't work immediately. Ssri and tricyclic are commonly used. Talk to your pain physician before starting any drugs.

Wondering if it's possible to have withdrawals from hydrocodone while taking oxycodone?

Wondering if it's possible to have withdrawals from hydrocodone while taking oxycodone?

Not likely: They are close cousins, but it depends on the doses of either/both drugs. If a person were taking 8 vicodin per day, and tried to replace it with 2 Percocet per day, they would likely have withdrawal. In equipotent doses (5 mg oxycodone = 7.5 mg hydrocodone) any withdrawal of one would be covered by replacement with the other.

I am having trouble quitting oxycodone/suboxone. How long are these withdrawal symptoms supposed to last?

I am having trouble quitting oxycodone/suboxone. How long are these withdrawal symptoms supposed to last?

Quiting Opiates: Suboxone is used to help with addiction to opiates like oxycodone. Maybe you need to get yourself on a maintenance dose of suboxone which you can then slowly taper off over time. In my experience, patients often will need to stay on suboxone for about half the amount of time they abused opiates. So, if a person took oxycodone for 4-5 years, they may need the suboxone for a couple of years.

Can I use oxycodone to help the withdrawal from 17yrs of methadone use daily, my Goal is to be off methadone, I have tried suboxone but relapsed. Ty?

Bad idea: Hard to get good help though if you have been getting it on the street. I suggest you keep at the suboxone. It is your best bet outside of a methadone clinic or seeing a specialist in addiction medicine.

How do you treat oxycodone withdrawal?

How do you treat oxycodone withdrawal?

Support care + meds.: Supportive care and use of Clonidine is essential for control of acute symptoms ie anxiety, sweating, agitation etc. Use of subutex (opiate agonist/antagonist) can also be considered and more so for long term maintenance. Need to be under the care of an md to guide the treatment and process.

Taking oxycodone 15 mgs. Changing pain docs. Lapse of 4 days. Will I have withdrawals?

Taking oxycodone 15 mgs. Changing pain docs. Lapse of 4 days. Will I have withdrawals?

Possible withdrawal: Over 4 days without medicine, it is possible to have withdrawal symptoms. It may help if you cut your tablets in half to make them last a little longer. Another option would be to ask your old doc or the pharmacist for a 4 day refill. This is typically honored after using the med a long time. We do not prescribe these medicines on HealthTap, so we probably could not help directly.

Is 12-15 hours long enough time after taking oxycodone to take Suboxone without getting early withdrawal?

Depends: If you're taking Suboxone to treat opiod drug addiction, you should wait until you experience some signs of withdrawal, then begin it. If you're taking it for chronic pain, 12-15 hours is certainly not long enough for sustained release oxycodone, and prob not long enough for immediate release oxycodone. For that I recommend about 20 hours.

How long does it take withdrawals from stopping oxycodone to go away when you quit cold turkey 5 days now?

How long does it take withdrawals from stopping oxycodone to go away when you quit cold turkey 5 days now?

Days to weeks: The physical symptoms rarely last longer than a week, but the cravings may last much longer. Consider attending a meeting of narcotics anonymous. If you are at risk for relapse, you might consult an addiction specialist about using buprenorphine (suboxone).

Only 1 month on Oxycodone 15/4 daily. Changing pain docs. 4 day lapse. Withdrawals? Anything I can do if present dr won't cover these days??

Only 1 month on Oxycodone 15/4 daily. Changing pain docs. 4 day lapse. Withdrawals? Anything I can do if present dr won't cover these days??

Do nothing foolish!: Ask both doctors to help with the gap - ask a pharmacist too. If you need to do it on your own, plan to have a caring person nearby - set up the most comfortable situation you can w/ lot of favorites - music, films, books, food, etc. And discover how you do. People survive under debris in mine collapses, etc. And this will not be that bad. But ask for help - it may be there for you.

Supervision!: You need to be doing, this, under, the supervision of a doctor. If you have suboxone, you should have a doctor that prescribed it. If you don't, find one.

If already in withdrawal from Oxycodone, can I take the suboxone without gettin precipitated WD even if it's only been 15-17hrs since last dose of oxy?

If already in withdrawal from Oxycodone, can I take the suboxone without gettin precipitated WD even if it's only been 15-17hrs since last dose of oxy?

Most likely: Officially, you need to wait at least 24 hours. Practically, many people do it and even earlier. Legally, you need to do it in the presence of your doctor. Practically, if you are sweating, have muscle cramps, goosebumps, diarrhea – you can do it. Just start with a very small piece of the film to test if you are not precipitating further problems. Good luck. Get treatment.

I've been prescribed 20mg oxycodone for several yrs. 4x day. Thinking about trying to come off them but fear withdrawal. What's the best way to taper?

Speak with your Dr.: He can refer you to a pain specialist or one who deals with addiction/withdrawals. S/he may be able to help you too. You can't go cold turkey, but you can be under medical supervision to begin tapering doses that s/he is monitoring you to prevent against withdrawal issues. It's great you have decided upon this step. Now, let your doctor hold your hand thru this process safely.

See below: Not enough info. Why are you running out? . It seems likely that you are often not medically stable and often just holding on. Your entire regimen needs to be reevaluated.

Why does a long half-life mean a long withdrawal? Xanax (alprazolam) and oxycodone have short hls but w/d can last months. Why would suboxone. Be longer?

Time Dependency: Narcotic withdrawal times and severity are complex phenomena and not easy to summarize. The time it takes the body to get rid of narcotics (half-lives) may have far more to do with length and severity of dependence, malnutrition, sleep deprivation and kidney and liver function than the pharmacokinetic profile of the drug. Please speak with your pain management specialist for specific advice.

Why do some docs say a long half-life mean a long withdrawal? Xanax (alprazolam) and oxycodone have short h-ls and wd can last months. Chemically speaking, why?

Good question: With a short half life drug, the peak of severe and possible life threating withdrawal as could be the case with xanax (alprazolam) come on quicker and fade quicker. However a prolonged withdrawal state can persist, weeks and months after for both short and long half life drugs. Longer half life drugs tend to have less peak, though amount of drug used and length of use affect the withdrawal state as well.
