Birth Control Pills (Definition)

Also known as oral contraceptives, birth control pills are highly effective oral medications that use hormones to prevent pregnancy. There are two main types of birth control pills: one with estrogen and progestin (also known as the combination pill) and one with just progestin. Do you ovulate while on birth control pills?

You can.: Birth control pills (bcp's) are intended to suppress the ovaries and prevent pregnancy by preventing ovulation. However, nothing is 100%. When a woman is ovulating and on birth control pills can she still get pregnant?

When a woman is ovulating and on birth control pills can she still get pregnant?

Unlikely: Birth control pills work by STOPPING ovulation, and if you are faithful about taking them daily, they are 99% effective! I do believe that 7 days off the pill is too long for some women and only advise 4 days off, and then start a new package of pills. Many of the newer pills only have 3 or 4 days off to reduce the risk of inadvertent ovulation. Take a test if in doubt. ...Read more

I missed one pill on the 5th day of the 1st week, next day i took 2 pills. Is ovulation possible? I am taking birth control pills for more than a year

Ovulation: Ovulation is possible if you miss a pill, the more you miss, or the longer the interval between pills the more likely the birth control pills will be ineffective. When this happens we usually recommend using other measures during that cycle such as condoms as an adjunct. Abstinence is best. Good luck :). ...Read more

How likely is ovulation if I missed 2 birth control pills in a row during the second week? (Doubled up after missing) my pill has 0.35 mg estrogen..

Possible : That's why you must scrupously take those pills! They are much more effective if you actually use them as directed. You should abstain from any sexual activity for the rest of the month if you want to guarantee that you won't get pregnant this month. Be more careful in the future. We believe skipping one day is safe, two days is risky. ...Read more
