I've been on strong antibiotics and now I have oral thrush. What are good over-the-counter or home remedies i can try?
Tips + Rx: If you have thrush you can rinse your mouth with warm salt water. Use a soft toothbrush on your teeth. Consider taking probiotics like lactobacillus acidophilus. You can also drink kefir or eat yogurts that have live probiotic cultures. Avoid eating excessive sugar. See your physician for prescription antifungal medication. ...Read more
Not as well.: There are some over-the-counter remedies, but no guarantee that they will work as well. You can try rinsing with a baking soda solution, salt water, cider vinegar or hydrogen peroxide. However these are not good options if you are treating a baby. Gentian violet is also another option, but is a bit messy. As with any meds, please discuss with your doctor. ...Read more
No: Thrush is not a bacterial infection. It is a fungal infection. Scraping it off will leave a raw bleeding surface which is one way to diagnose Candida Albicans from other white lesions. Scraping it off will not eliminate the infection. You need to take the appropriate medication. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Baby 1 m old has been receiving nystatin 2weeks for oral thrush. Thrush has not improved. Any natural course of treatment? Any chance it could clear up on its own? Should we continue with nystatin?
Dentist prescribed me nystatin for oral thrush. Its a rinse and spit form. Will i have systemic side effects? Or no since it isnt systemic treatment?
Probably Not: Providing you don't swallow too much there should be no systemic effects. Talk to your dentist if you have more questions. ...Read more
I took bacterial vaginosis treatment by mouth two weeks ago, but I got oral thrush from it, and I think my BV has come back after having sex?!
Recurrent BV: Recurrent BV is a common problem, and unfortunately the most effective treatments (usually metronidazole by mouth) can trigger yeast infections. BV isn't usually an STD in the usual sex, except in lesbian partners. Still, even with male partners, it's a good idea to either avoid sex or use condoms consistently (even with regular partners) for several weeks. For expert advice see an NHS GUM clinic. ...Read more
What kind of home treatments will cure oral thrush and how long will it take for it to be actually cured?
None: Thrush is treated with topical antifungals to the mouth. These are nystatin(mycostatin) liquid suspension-swish and swallow 4 times a day or Clotrimazole troches-dissolve one in mouth 4 times a day until the lesions are gone. For resistant cases fluconazole(diflucan) 100-200 mgs. Orally once a day for a few days will usually work. I know of no home remedies that work for thrush. ...Read more
Repeated oral thrush without being on antibiotics. Treatments with diflucan (fluconazole) and nystatin oral didn't help. Have MS and use flonase. Thank you.
After intense therapy 2000mg kefalexin to treat chronic cystitis for 3 months, oral thrush developed that no medicine is working for, and angular chielitis developed since February. Given fucidin, but if it's fungal will this make it worse?
Here are some...: Using broad-spectrum antibiotics always possibly comes with fungal infection somewhere; that is nothing uncommon. As to angular cheilitis, one has to consider sun overexposure, poor nutrition, allergies, medications, dehydration, diet, and certain systemic diseases. I have been on antibiotics for wisdom teeth surgery removal. I have a mild case of oral thrush and I am going to start swab treatments today. In a week, would it be okay for me to kiss my boyfriend? Would he be at risk of getting oral thrush from me?
It is ok in a week: Thrush generally occurs when the normal bacterial flora in your mouth is changed due to taking antibiotics or when your immune system isn't working correctly. If your boyfriend has a normal immune system and you use the swabs for a week, he should be fine. Also, it is probably not a good idea to french kiss if your surgery is recent. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
There are some: Rinse with 1 tbsp of organic apple cider vinegar in 1 cup of warm water. Also rinsing with a solution of 3% hydrogen peroxide can help. Mixing 1/2 tsp of salt in 1 cup of warm water is an alternative as is a solution of baking soda. Acidophilus capsules can help restore the normal bacterial flora in your body. The best treatment, however, are the prescription meds that directly kill candida. ...Read more
