What is a good pain reliever/muscle relaxer for severe back pain?

What is a good pain reliever/muscle relaxer for severe back pain?

See your doctor: Get evaluated by your doctor, following this he/she will develop a treatment plan. It is important that an underlying issue is not masked by meds. Also, other than for a few days 3-4 days, taking muscle relaxers/pain medication for back pain longer than this is not really advisable, except for a few pathologies (for example cancer, recent surgery, things in that line). ...Read more

Muscle (Definition)

It is a body tissue that has the ability to contract. It shortens and generates force. It relaxes and returns to its original length. Muscles move joints, stabilize the body, move air and food through the organs, act as valves for bladder, bowel and other organs. They control movement of the eyes. They help us express ourselves by changing the shape of our ...Read more

I'm breastfeeding twins, but having terrible back pain. If I take a muscle relaxer, how long until it is safe to breastfeed again?

24-48 hrs: If you only took one muscle relaxer pill, 24 hours should be enough to clear the drug adequately, if you took more, I would wait 2 days rather than one day ...Read more

Hi I have a hernia an Lower back pain iam on a muscle relaxer an an anti inflammatory but it doesn't help with my pain one bit,?

Suggestions: There are some things you can do to improve your discomfort while you heal. Try the anti-inflammatory naprosyn (naproxen) if you're not taking it already since it's long-acting). I suggest also increasing your water intake a lot (improves blood flow to spasmed tissue), use a microwaveable heat sock to low back several times a day and avoid stretching, as that typically just recreates the mechanism of injury. ...Read more

See a specialist: There are many causes of hip/low back pain. Most of these causes are related to the muscles, joints, ligaments, and bones in the back. I want my psychiatrist to realize the chronic back pain I have. How do I explain to him that a muscle relaxant would help. I'm not looking for opioids?

I want my psychiatrist to realize the chronic back pain I have. How do I explain to him that a muscle relaxant would help. I'm not looking for opioids?

Not psychiatrist: Chronic back pain needs a workup -- starting with your family physician and possibly others. Your psychiatrist would most likely not be managing muscle relaxants unless s/he is also a pain medicine doctor and this is part of your treatment contract with him or her. Your psychiatrist may understand that you have pain, but encourage you to work with the appropriate doctors to assess ; treat this. ...Read more

Are there any muscle relaxant medications that do not cause drowsiness or tummy upset? For back pain, thanks

I'm afraid not: Tizanidine is the least likely to cause drowsiness (50% of people taking it get sleepy). The trade-off is that it's less proven to help acute back pain than cyclobenzaprine which seems to make almost everyone drowsy. Baclofen is just as bad. I usually recommend cyclobenzaprine at the 5mg dose taken just at bedtime for those who find it overly sedating during the day. Usually short-term use only ...Read more

What muscle relaxant would you prescribe for chronic neck & back pain? Soma, zanaflex, (tizanidine) flexeril?

See below: I avoid Soma as it is essentially a tranquilizer, not a muscle relaxer. Both Zanaflex and Flexeril are good medications. There best one is the one that works best for you. Other options (less sedating) are Baclofen and skelaxin (metaxalone). ...Read more

Bulging discs @ L4-5. After 4-5 hrs of sleep I wake up with back pain. Physiotherapist&chiropractor, muscle relaxant didn't help much. Suggestions?

Stay active: Our bodies are meant to move, so staying cautiously active as tolerated during pain flare ups is very important. Physical therapy has helped many people with bulging discs, and as a last resort, spinal steroid injections. Some people find that sleeping with a pillow under their knees prevents some of the discomfort from laying flat for long periods of time. Hope you are feeling better soon. ...Read more

I believe I have a UTI. What can I take over the counter that will shorten the duration, and ease my side and back pain?

Don't do it!: It would be dangerous to continue trying to manage this yourself. You need to see a doctor and, if the diagnosis is confirmed, an antibiotic by prescription. Back and side pain suggest the UTI involves your kidney (pyelonephritis), which will not clear up without antibiotics and could be extremely serious, even fatal. There are no OTC drugs that will help this. See a doctor ASAP! ...Read more

I'm having bad back pain due to a fall I've taking over the counter medicine nothing has helped what would you suggest?

Evaluation: 34y female questions OTC meds for post-fall back pain. Proper medical practice requires first a diagnosis & then application of rational/proven therapy. What was damaged? See Osteopath or Physiatrist to diagnose. Avoid Chiropractors. In California, & likely other states, Chiropractors are not licensed to "diagnose". There is dearth of evidence for therapeutic efficacy from chiropractic therapies. ...Read more

1st x this yr happened previously 3 times I fill up with so much gas that my stomach is distended, back pain due 2 gas belching severe gas pains A LOT of over-the-counter gas meds 4 24 hr to fl bt?

Gas and acid reflux: These symptoms seem related to stomach and intestinal gas with acid reflux. You may also be relatively constipated. I recommend adding much more fiber to your diet, like high fiber cereal, oatmeal, apple, pear, celery and avoiding banana and greasy meat and pasta and sauce. Eat smaller amounts. Drink 2-3 liters of fluid per day in small sips. Do not gulp. Take simethicone. ...Read more

Can I take Goody powder with my muscle relaxer? I have a major migraine this morning and my lower back is killing me. I absolutely feel horrible?

Yes.....but: Assuming your "muscle relaxant" is truly that, "Goody"s" contains Aspirin, Tylenol (acetaminophen) and caffeine, and used for true Migraine control. Most HA are not migraines and may respond to plain NSAID or Acetaminophen based products. Seek medical evaluation to find out underlying cause of your back and neck pain/HA to find the best treatment plan for both and to avoid unnecessary agents. ...Read more
