Lipase (Definition)

Lipases, such as lipoprotein lipase and endothelial lipase, are enzymes that breakdown circulating triglycerides (tg). Specifically, lipases degrade tg rich lipoproteins including chylomicrons, very low density lipoprotein (vldl) and remnant particles produced by breakdown of chylomicron and vldl particles. Decreased lipase function leads to accumulation of ...Read more

Can pancreatic enzymes with protease, amylase and lipase hurt or help cancer?

Health fraud: Giving the pancreatic enzymes that help in pancreatic insufficiency (cystic fibrosis, chronic pancreatic scarring) as a cancer treatment is a cynical, cruel fraud. It's often packaged with "detoxification" and coffee enemas. Don't pay money to the people who've tried to deceive you on the thought "what if it did work?". ...Read more

Why is my husbands lipase 450 and amylase 250 so high. They said he has cirrossis of the liver. Those are pancreatic enzyme's.

Why is my husbands lipase 450 and amylase 250 so high. They said he has cirrossis of the liver. Those are pancreatic enzyme's.

I'm sorry: Elevated lipase and amylase can result from ongoing damage to the pancreas from alcohol -- perhaps refluxing up a damaged duct, or he may have a cystic fibrosis variant, a hereditary pancreatitis, or any of several other entities. Few diseases truly involve only one organ, and he may have more than one thing going on. This sounds serious and I am glad he has you to care for & love him. ...Read more

Are enzyme tablets effective for improving digestion? (e.g. amylase 120mg, protease 70mg, lipase 58mg, bromelain 100mg, etc) When should they be used?

Are you deficient?: Some folks have pancreatic lesions and cannot digest their food without supplemental enzymes. This is a common problem in kids with cystic fibrosis. For most folks, it's a complete waste of money -- like wearing glasses if you don't need them. ...Read more

I have gerd, 4 small gastric ulcers, & gastritis. Lipase enzymes mildly over limit, amylase levels are fine. What could this be from?

Excessive acid: There could be a medical condition causing too much acidity (zollinger-ellison) syndrome, or it could be from an h. Pylorii infection. Please discuss further with your GI doc since further testing is available to figure this out. Best wishes. ...Read more

Can pristiq (desvenlafaxine) cause low blood sugar of 64 in a patient with stage 3 CKD & elevated amylase and lipase enzymes. No diagnosis of pancreatitis from mayo.

Can pristiq (desvenlafaxine) cause low blood sugar of 64 in a patient with stage 3 CKD & elevated amylase and lipase enzymes. No diagnosis of pancreatitis from mayo.

Very unlikely: Up until october of 2013 there have only been 7 cases of hypoglycemia reported to the fda regarding Pristiq (desvenlafaxine) out of hundreds of thousands of prescriptions that have been written. Also, 64 is not technically low blood sugar. It must be below 50, and some specialists would use 40 aat a hypoglycemic cut-off. ...Read more

Mom has jaundice w elevated liver enzymes, and elevated amylase and lipase. Ct w contrast was done, no tumors seen. Could this be pancreatic cancer?

It is unclear: Hi kitten40047. The jaundice and elevated enzymes are concerning. It is reassuring to hear that the ct was negative. There may be other reasons for her symptoms. However, in the absence of any other explanation for the symptoms she has, you may want to have mom undergo additional tests, including perhaps MRI or endoscopy, which may shed more light on the pancreatic and liver areas. ...Read more
