Over Production Of Sebum
If Accutane decreases the sebum production which is the result of excess androgens then where instead does the excess androgens show up?
Local effect: The effect is local at the oil gland. The androgens just go on their merry way doing their guy thing. ...Read more
Milk and dairy products increase igf-1 levels that is shown in research papers to increase the sebum production as well. Is that so?
Haven't heard of it: When reading such research papers, one should ask questions such as: which milk products (there are thousands or more), who were the test subjects, who were the control subjects (did not receive the test products), how many people were tested (the more the better), how much were the igf-1 levels affected, etc... Sometimes research papers have trustworthy results; othertimes not at all. ...Read more

Is there any way to reduce the sebum of scalp? Male hormones are ok. What other things can contribute to excess production of sebum?
REDUCING SCALP SEBUM:
SEBUM IS OIL.
REMOVING OIL FROM THE SCALP IS SIMPLE BUT TIME COSUMING.
YOU MUST SHAMPOO DAILY, YES, DAILY, WITH ONE OF THE SHAMPOOS THAT CAN REMOVE THE OIL.
IF YOU DO NOT MIND THE ODOR OF TAR, TRY ANY OVER THE COUNTER TAR SHAMPOO DAILY.
CUT OUT ALL NUTS, CHOCOLATE, AND CUT DOWN ON DAIRY FOODS.
IF THIS DOESN'T CUT DOWN ON GREASY SCALP, PLEASE SEE A DERMATOLOGIST.
BEST LUCK. ...Read more
How come the sebum production can be reduced by Accutane without treating its cause, the hormones? Can you please explain the mechanism?
Accutane: Accutane is 13 cis retinoic acid.. When we eat vitamin a it is fat soluble and is stored int he liver. When the body needs vitamin a the storage form is converted in to 13 cis retinoic acid, which is water soluble and is eliminated from the body quickly. One of it's actions is to affect the formation of the sebaceous glands, minimizing their size and oil production. ...Read more
Is any supplements I can take to reduce sebum production? I have bad seb derm In my eyebrows with oily yellow crust, nothing my derm gives me works
Not really: Good hygiene very important. Daily care of these areas to remove crust and keep areas clean and dry. It really is an upkeep. Issues. Unfortunately for my patients with this condition if has to become a daily or even several times a day ritual of treatment to keep it in check. Using the topical treatments as prescribed by your dermatologist also very important. Sorry. Best of luck. Dr R ...Read more
I've read DHA and ELA greatly help regulate sebum production. I have been developing small sebaceous cysts, are high dosages an effective preventative?
Don't need to treat: Sebaceous, or more appropriately named, epidermoid cysts, don't usually cause enough problems to need therapy or removal, and doses of DHA or ELA will not decrease the cysts. Keeping your skin clean and free of excess oil is the best maintenance therapy ...Read more
I am suffering from MALABSORPTION and at the same time has EXCESS PRODUCTION OF SEBUM in SCALP. So which vitamin/mineral deficiency could cause this?
I have severe vitamin b12, d deficiency and at same time has excess production of sebum on scalp. Is both are related?? And any other mineral for it??
Unrelated: There is no direct relationship or association I am aware of between seborrhea (what you have) and B12 deficiecy. You are very young for being so B12 deficient. Do you not like LIVER, SALMON, TROUT, CLAMS, or BEEF? A mineral put into shampoos is selenium but I find that has variable effects. Check with a dermatologist for more information...and fix your B12 status...VERY IMPORTANT! ...Read more

Myth: Since carrots contain carotene which the body has the ability to make into vitamin A, and very high doses of vitamin A or its relatives (famously isotretinoin) cause loss of the sebaceous glands, there's a "pop" idea that eating carrots suppresses sebum production. You can't make carotene into vitamin A fast enough to get toxic / high levels from doing it. ...Read more
