Can a 12 year old girl have an ovarian cyst without having her period yet? The left side of my abdomen hurts like a cramp.
Ovarian cyst: Yes, it is possibleGet a more detailed answer ›
No---unusual: Ovarian cysts are very common. They produce pain once you start ovulating--not a serious problem
Many: Small "cysts" of the ovary are common and a normal part of the ovary developing "eggs." at times this process goes haywire and a baseball size or ^ fluid filled cyst and form. Frequently, they "dissolve" and no treatment is needed. However, these patients should see a gyn doctor and be followed since it is possible for these "cysts" to form more serious masses that could need surgical treatment.
Many things: This means there is a cyst on the ovary that has different characteristics throughout the cyst. The report is contrasting this with the more common simple cyst. The next step is to see an Obgyn who can determine the size and evaluate if surgical intervention is needed
Yes: To develop an ovarian cyst you need two basic things, ovaries and the hormonal stimulation that can trigger the cyst. Ovarian folicles that mature normally will produce eggs, those that develop abnormally create cysts and can enlarge.
Cyst: It depends on what type of cyst. If it is secreting hormones then probably not.
Common finding: Many young women have ovarian cysts and many will experience a spontaneous rupture. The cyst ruptures not the ovary, and may release a small amount of blood into the abdomen triggering some discomfort. Natural ovulation is just the release of an egg through much the same process, the cyst doesn't release an egg.

My 13 year old daughter has a 23cm ovarian cyst that is causing a blockage in her kidney, is this common? What are the chances of her getting more?
No: A cyst of this size is not common in an adolescent woman. I assume you have seen a gynecologist as this most likely needs to be removed. It will be tested by a pathologist to determine what type of cyst and whether or not it is likely to recur.
Dr. Says I have small, bilateral ovarian cysts after trans-vaginal ultrasound. Says he thinks they are functional. Could be serious? 32 year old woman.
I am sure your: Doc told u that is not serious as many women have that, if the cysts would grow which is unlikely then it could be a problems but that rarely happens if u have small functional cysts, if your periods are irregular or other problems that can often be treated with bc pills unless you are trying for pregnancy.
21 year old I had an US to check on recent IUD placement. 2.5cm x 1.4cm septated ovarian cyst. Is this something that needs to come out now or monitor?
Evaluation: There a different causes of cysts on sonogram. They can arise from the Fallopian tube or ovary. The size cyst you describe is small and common in someone your age. You should follow up with a sono in the next 2-3 months of monitor for resolution or change. If it becomes symptomatic, grows significantly, or changes in appearance, you could undergo a laparoscopic procedure to remove the cyst.
Common finding: The ovarian follicles (egg sites) often form cysts of various sizes in adolescence and adulthood. They can be small and never recognised or larger. They are often found on ultrasound for pain or other symptoms. Correlation with other history and symptoms determines the importance of any such finding.
No known cause: While ovarian cysts do occur in teenagers, they are relatively uncommon. Slight increase risk if family history. Diagnosis can be on exam with abdominal mass; sometimes found on ultrasound for abdominal pain problems. If large, cyst may need surgical intervention. Some congenital syndromes with other signs of endocrine disease can occur.

Normal scan: The size of the uterus and thickness of the endometrium are normal. You have a small ovarian cyst. This is also a normal finding. Your body makes a small ovarian cyst each month in preparation for ovulation. All these ultrasound findings are normal. Best wishes!See 1 more doctor answer
