Hard to say: There are many causes of pain in the foot without any apparent trauma. Without knowing more about your boy's health history and getting a look at his tootsie, i'd be misleading you with any specific answers.

Plantar fasciitis: Most common pain will be due to plantarfascia inflammation. I don't know if by left side you mean in the arch or outside of the arch. If the pain is due to a sprain ie stepping off a curb, you may have pain in the cuboid bone which may be subluxed or out of position. TWO THINGS: I'm assuming no injury/trauma. First, is it the very early signs of a pinched nerve supplying the second and third toes; it's called a neuroma, most commonly affecting the 3rd and 4th toes. Second, if diabetic, is it the very, very early signs of diabetic neuropathy? Those are my thoughts.
