DOE: Your symptom is called "dyspnea on exertion." the cause may be simple deconditioning or overweight/obesity (if that applies to you?) but diseases of the lungs or heart may be contributing. The list of possibilities is too extensive for this forum. Please see your doctor. ...Read more

Is it normal after laying around all day to feel a little out of breath when going up and down the stairs? I don't experience it when walking around

I suspect normal: The real test is how you breathe with exercise. If you're fine walking around this is probably nothing specific. You could always check with your physician and get a cardiac check up if necessary ...Read more

Is it okay if I don't get tired and breath normally after running or going up the stairs?

Is it okay if I don't get tired and breath normally after running or going up the stairs?

Absolutely: Yes, you may just be in very good aerobic condition. That being said, if you are doing this for exercise, you will usually need to raise your intensity up to the extent that at least your heart rate gets elevated beyond your resting rate. ...Read more

I'm short of breath just from going up the stairs, ecg, d dimer, and chest x ray all come back normal! Could it be a blood clot still or could it be due to changing my pill?

Need more tests: The three tests you describe are by no means a complete enough work-up based on the severity of your symptoms. You need to rule out both a cardiac cause with a BNP level and an ECHOCARDIOGRAM, as well as a pulmonary embolus with a "V/Q" scan or a CT pulmonary angiogram. If your symptoms are indeed sudden in onset and this severe, I would go to an emergency department and get tested there. ...Read more

Likely none: There is no such things as permanent. Cause of breathing problems may arise from lung, heart or other organs. The symptoms may be controlled with treatment, but there is no permanent fix. Good luck! ...Read more

Lately I've been getting out of breath easily. Like going up/down stairs but at gymnastics I don't get out of breath that easy. What could this be?

I get winded very easily by walking up stairs or walking fast I am pretty fit and I am healthy weight but I do have asthma how can I make the shortened of breath go away?

Asthma control: Your shortness of breath may be a sign of uncontrolled asthma. If you are not already taking a daily medication, it may be time for one. If the asthma is well controlled and you continue to experience shortness of breath, other causes should be investigated by your doctor. ...Read more

I have POTS and Lupus how come I can now run 2 miles on a jog but I still get short of breath going up flights of stairs?

It's your POTS: Your ability to run 2 miles suggests that SLE is not affecting your heart or lungs. POTS often presents with shortness of breath &/or palpitations, more common at the beginning of exercise. You require a more lengthly warm-up, hard to provide when going up the stairs. If this symptom is excessively bothersome, you may benefit from low to moderate dose beta blocker such as metoprolol or nadolol ...Read more

I have been, burping, yawning, and farting even going out of breath if I go up 10 stairs. Could you please tell me what these symptoms are?

To vague: These symptoms are to vague to be helpful, they are consistent either with being part of the human race or some advanced malignancy. But at 18yo and short of breath going up 10 stairs I would vote for deconditioning, eating poorly and not getting enough rest> if this persist after addressing some of these things go see your provider. ...Read more

Heart and lungs supposedly check out fine except for tachycardia. Anytime I go up stairs or little activity get short of breath and heart pounds why?

Out of shape: Most common reason for shortness of breath (if you do not smoke) is being out of shape. Your heart and lungs already checked ok and I assume you do not have anemia, hyperthyroidism or other illnesses.
You should start an exercise program and train regularly to become physically fit. ...Read more

Fell on stairs 2 weeks ago. Bruised tailbone and hurt my ribs. Sometimes it's hard to breath because my ribs ache. Should I go to doc or is it okay?

Ok: This sounds ok. A fall such as yours could cause irritation and bruising to the areas you mention. IF you have a small fracture of the ribcage, this is not something that can be casted or treated otherwise medically, so I recommend you just relax and not overexert yourself within the next four weeks. You should notice slow improvement of symptoms over the next few weeks. ...Read more

Go see your doctor: Sorry but I can't figure out your age by your post. Your avatar suggests female but that's just a wild guess. Bottom line: you need to go see your family doctor for a full & complete evaluation. This could be a lung or heart issue or both. Or could it could due to low thyroid or low blood. Without any more detail, we can't provide you any better answer except to direct you to your doctor. ...Read more

After going up stairs I am short of breath. I have allergies and a history on the family of mitral valve prolapse. Any reason why this would happen?

Yes: MVP if severe enough can impact your circulatory function and thus the shortness of breath. On the other hand, if you have hay fever, you do have a higher risk of having asthma without the usual symptoms such as coughing and wheezing. You need to get a lung function test to check out your lungs. If normal, then a cardiovascular evaluation may be needed. Either way, you need to talk to your doctor ...Read more

It may be as simple as a medication adjustment.
It may be as serious as a stent thrombosis or other complications. I noticed that you did not mention any antiplatelet medications or other heart medications.

Not OK!: At any age that kind of shortness of breath with exertion needs to be worked up. Perhaps a lung or heart problem could be underlying. If you are terribly out of shape that could be the problem but the more serious conditions need to be ruled out before that is assumed. ...Read more

What exercises should I do so I'm not so out of breath after climbing stairs?

Conditioning: Any aerobic exercise (walking, running, swimming, stairs, etc) will help. Start slow and work your way up. When you feel your self getting winded slow down, recover and work your way back up. If you push yourself you will be out of breath at any level of conditioning and as long as you are in your target zone (heart rate) and not short of breath you are doing well. ...Read more
