Other Uses For Silver Sulfadiazine
Not much.: While it is the most popular treatment for burns, there are more advanced treatments that work better and faster. It often causes an eschar (scab) at the edge of burns that actually slows healing, and it is not safe in infants. Hydrocolloid dressings not only speed the healing of burns, they also relieve the pain and need changed much less often than silver sulfadiazine or antibiotic dressings. ...Read more
It is used: Although silvadene (silver sulfadiazine) is used for venous ulcers, it is rarely ever necessary. Silvadene (silver sulfadiazine) actually increases the risk of infection if you don't change it and reapply it a few times a day. Antibiotic creams and ointments have been shown to have no effect on ulcer healing. The mainstay of treatment for venous ulcers is compression, walking, and treating the underlying reflux that is causing the ulcer. ...Read more
See your doctor: If you are using a prescription cream your doctor will decide that issue with you. Do not share some one else's creams as that increases your chance of infection. ...Read more

Silvadene (silver sulfadiazine) Cream: There are many references in medical literature regarding silvadene (silver sulfadiazine) cream being used in the treatment of eczema. The major use is when the eczema is advanced enough that sores are present and an anti-microbial in indicated to reduce the risk of infection. I would not use it unless there are open sores or an indication of infection as it may contribute to inflammation if the skin is sensitive. ...Read more

My 12 year old and 9 year old have a sunburn. Can I use 1% silver sulfadiazine cream on their sunburn?
Expensive overkill: Sunburn is response of the tissues to injury from solar radiation. It is simply inflammation which means increase blood flow to the area to promote healing. Do not use ice as this can injure already injured skin. Cool water soaks can help as can taking anti-inflammation medicines like Motrin or advil (ibuprofen). Avoid any further damage as this can cause scarring. Good skin cream applied daily/gently helps. ...Read more
What antibiotics who you suggest for herpes and can I use silver sulfadiazine cream for the outside area.
Acyclovir and others: The only "antibiotics" that can help herpes are antiviral drugs like acyclovir, valacyclovir, or famciclovir. For a new infection, oral treatment is quite helpful. They are not very effective against recurrent outbreaks, and creams or ointments usually don't work at all. Onging oral treatment can help prevent outbreaks. Sulfadiazine won't help at all. See a doctor experienced in herpes. Good luck! ...Read more
How long does a quarter size rug burn on elbow to heal? Needs to heal before the 8th. Should I use Silver sulfadiazine? Should I dress it?
Depends: On your underlying health and healing potential, and the depth of the abrasion. Overall, it usually would be better in 7-10 days. The cream would help prevent infection and if still new and "oozing" than a light, airy, sterile dressing would be fine. Best wishes. ...Read more
Not under 2 months: It is safest to avoid silver sulfadiazine ("silvadene") on babies under 2 months of age. The cream is really most appropriate for burns, so I would advise perhaps zinc oxide instead for a typical diaper rash. Other alternatives include regular petroleum jelly or aquaphor, a+d ointment, or other diaper rash creams available otc. If things are getting worse, best to see your doctor. ...Read more

If you are not sure which, then have it checked. ...Read more
I've been using this cream on my face after shaving to help with skin irritation : Cicanov+. It contains Silver sulfadiazine. Is it ok to use often?
Bad idea: You have no reason to be using a silver based cream on trivial skin lesions. This is a burn-unit medicine. You may end up disfiguring yourself, though silver is more dangerous taken systemically. Cicanov also comes without the silver; if you like this stuff, get the silver-free preparation. ...Read more
Can I use 1% silver sulfadiazine cream of poison izy rash? If so, do I continue to use calamine lotion?
USELESS: Silver sulfadiazine will not relieve you in any way. Calamine lotion is barely effective. "Poison" ivy is a violent reaction which will occur only on those allergic to it and only where the sap came on the skin. A prescription strength cortisone is very effective. Clobetasol gel or augmented betamethasone cream, . OK to wash. No special soap makes any difference. Not contagious. Will not spread. ...Read more
