Is Aleve (naproxen) okay to take with a slight concussion?

Is Aleve (naproxen) okay to take with a slight concussion?

No, not early on: It is typically not recommended to take nsaids, of which aleve is one, in the early stages of concussion. This is because of the small but significant risk of bleeding that occurs with NSAID use and the possibility that there may be more of an injury to the brain (a bleed from a vessel injury) than just concussion. Tylenol (acetaminophen) is preferred as it is not an nsaid. ...Read more

My brother plays football, and complained about a headache all day. The pain did not go away even though we gave him Aleve (naproxen). Is it a concussion?

Concussion?: Did your brother get hit in the head? It's kind of hard to have a concussion without being hit in the head. A headache by itself is a headache, not a concussion. What you should NOT expect from HealthTap is an answer to your question, "Is it a concussion? " There is no substitute (including HealthTap) for a hands-on assessment in a doctor's office. Please reread the HealthTap disclaimer. ...Read more

I agree: A neurologist may be difficult to schedule yourself. See your primary doctor and go from there. Our city has a concussion clinic which sees patients within a day or two. Neurology clinics can take 2 months 2 see you. Good luck! Happy healing! ...Read more

Adult Still Disease: Adult still's disease is notable for high fevers, rash, joint swelling and pain. If pain is the prime symptom especially with swelling and tenderness, then emphasis should be on prevening joint damage as well as pain. Should I take more Aleve (naproxen) to relieve my headache? What would happen if I took too high of a dose?

No: If you are not getting relief from the normal dose of aleve (naproxen) see your doctor for an evaluation. Doubling up on your aleve (naproxen) increases the risk of side effects which are often deleterious to various organ systems including the GI and renal systems. ...Read more

I've had on/off fever for months, but now it's been 11 days w/o relief with aleve/tylenol. Begins a few hours after I wake and I feel terrible. Ideas?

CIDP management: In my review, I did not find fever as a manifestation of cidp. However, cidp is an immunological disorder that makes you more susceptible to infections. You need to see the physician who is treating your cidp for an evaluation. If he (she) has no new suggestions, ask for a referral to an infectious disease specialist. ...Read more

Can I combine Aleve and tylenol (acetaminophen) to help relieve my toothache? If not, which OTC pain killer is best for my toothache?

Yes: Yes, in fact those two in combination work quite well. When the pain progresses, often times no pain medications will "make a dent" in it. You should interpret your pain as a warning sign and be evaluated before it progresses to a dental emergency. An alternative to aleve (naproxen) is ibuprofen. Either of these are probably your best otc options. ...Read more

I have LBP x4 wks after intensive golf (8 days in a row). No radicular sympt. Tried PT exercises & stretching & Aleve (naproxen) w/temp. Relief only. Suggestions?

You need diagnosis: This may be something you can work with stretching and exercise but you may need to see your physician to get a definite diagnosis and therefore definite therapy. Can try anti-inflamm: Pain in the buttock and down the side of the leg is concerning for 'sciatica' which is usually due to a slipped disc in your spine.

How long have you had it?

Sometimes these injuries can be from heavy lifting, accidents, etc.

You can certainly try an anti-inflammatory like ibuprofen or naproxen, but I would see a doctor for an exam.

In addition to meds- doc may suggest exercise, therapy/more. ...Read more

I'm now taking meloxicam for back pain, with right leg pain. I haven't received any relief. A friend recommended I switch to Aleve (naproxen). What do you thin?

Get it checked by MD: It is difficult to suggest based on your question. Pain in back associated with pain in leg not responding to pain med like you add taking needs to be evaluated by your doctor. Of course you can try aleve but over the counter aleve (naproxen) is not that strong you will need to take2 tab every 12 hours. Get it checked with detailed history as to how [email protected] started it. Exam and may need imagin ...Read more

Sustained a slight concussion/ moderate whiplash 2 weeks ago. Been taking fioricet (acetaminophen butalbital and caffeine) for headache for 8 days, little to no relief when wears off. Typical?

Need diagnosis: The head and neck issues may be interacting, and the neck may be a trigger for the headache, but might consider possibility of disc protrusion, or even thoracic outlet syndrome secondary to shoulder strap. Also, might wonder about intracranial problem. See your doc and try some conservative meds and physical therapy first. ...Read more

My 11-yo son has been getting bad headaches in temples last three nights. He had minor concussion a few months ago - not sure if related. Could just be a migraine - have been alternating ibuprofen/tylenol, minor relief. What else should we do?

My 11-yo son has been getting bad headaches in temples last three nights. He had minor concussion a few months ago - not sure if related. Could just be a migraine - have been alternating ibuprofen/tylenol, minor relief. What else should we do?

Probably unrelated: A concussion can cause headaches and/or lower the threshold for a headaches shortly after the concussion (within a couple of weeks). However, it's hard to connect these headaches now with a concussion months ago. Think about other causes of headaches- stress, low blood sugar, eye fatigue/poor vision, infections, dehydration, etc. Of course, see your pediatrician if not improving. ...Read more
