Otc For Gerd
Is there any over-the-counter acid reflux medicine stronger than Pepcid (famotidine) complete and prilose otc?
Sure...: Pepcid (famotidine) is an H2 blocker. That class of drugs relative to acid suppression is exceeded by the proton pump inhibitor (PPI) class, of which Prilosec was the first. Many subsequent PPI's have been introduced with longer durations of action. Although we can't endorse particular products on HealthTap, ask your pharmacist to recommend another PPI. Better yet, see your gastroenterologist for the right Rx. ...Read more
What OTC medicine works better than Prilosec for frequent heartburn for acid reflux disease. I have been diagnosed by endoscopy?
Tums (calcium carbonate) won't do it: Please get examined by a doc. A natural approach is to use lots of dgl. Dgl is licorice supplement but it has an enzyme removed that can raise BP licorice is eaten over a long period of time. Avoiding acid-forming foods can help and don't lie down right after eating. Does Zantac (ranitidine) works for acid reflux? Would you recommend Zantac (ranitidine) for acid reflux?
Zantac (ranitidine) works 4 GERD: Zantac (ranitidine) was the leading drug in the world when introduced in the early 1980's to treat indigestion. Conventional prescription doses were 300mg twice daily. The drug is effective in suppressing acid, but when used longterm can promote tolerance (so that larger doses are needed over time to block acid). Current over-the-counter dosing is 75mgs. Take along with behavior & diet aimed at reducing gerd. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Prilosec: Prilosec and similar medications tend to be better at preventing acid reflux than in treating it once it has already started. If you have only occasional heartburn, often the best treatment is good old-fashioned chewable antacids, such as Mylanta or Tums (calcium carbonate). If it is frequent, Prilosec might be helpful, but if it doesn't go away, you should see your doctor. Look up anti-reflux measures. Good luck. ...Read more

Do the ppi's such as Nexium (esomeprazole) and other prescription ppi's work to help laryngopharyngeal reflux?
Gerd: These medications have differing mechanisms of action and usually it's not necessary to take them together although I don't think it is harmful to do so. Zantac (ranitidine) has a quicker onset of action and thus relieves heartburn quicker, but overall, taking prilosec daily is more effective for most patients but should there be breakthrough heartburn, taking a zantac (ranitidine) in addition for quick relief may help. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
Apples & oranges: Both medications are acid blockers, but their similarity ends there. Famotidine is an h2-receptor blocker that diminishes acid production, whereas Pantoprazole is a proton pump inhibitor that nearly extinguishes acid output. If you have acid reflux, less acid means better relief--so Pantoprazole would be a better rx choice. No drug is perfect, so discuss pros & cons of each drug with your doctor. ...Read more
Not exactly: Zantac (ranitidine) is an h2 (histamine) blocker that is typically used for ge (acid) reflux. However, it is commonly used to treat chronic hives in combination with traditional antihistamines. It is also used for additional treatment of severe (anaphylaxis) allergic reactions although first line treatment is Epinephrine and h1 antihistamine. It will not help allergic rhinitis. ...Read more

What can I do for GERD that won't respond to omeprazole, carafate, (sucralfate) Tums or gasx. No delayed emptyor h pylori, have gastritis esophagitis. Help in pain?
Diet: Since you do not smoke or drink alcohol, you may need to revisit your diet (no caffeine) and eliminate all foods that make the gerd symptoms worse. If you have already done that and you are having symptoms that cannot be controlled with medications, you may need to seek a surgical consult for gastric fundoplication or depending on the anatomy of your esophagus another procedure. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Several meds: besides those two, there are at least 6 to 8 other medications which can be used for chronic acid problems. If you have given those medicines a try and they have been unsuccessful, I would return to your primary care doctor or gastroenterologist for any other evaluation which may be needed, and potentially for a prescription for a new medication. Good luck. ...Read more
Is there a drug most beneficial for treating gastritis? On nexium (esomeprazole) for reflux/cough for 3 mos which went away but now have mild gastritis. Nexium (esomeprazole) cause?
Gastritis: Nexium (esomeprazole) is quite effective treatment for gastritis and it generally causes healing after only a few weeks in most cases unless there is achlorhydria(lack of stomach acid) from the beginning. I'm not aware of nexium (esomeprazole) or ppi's causing cases of classic gastritis. A gastroenterologist is best qualified to evaluate you for diagnosis and treatment. A gastroscopy may be done if the diagnosis is in doubt ...Read more

In fact the effect is the same and Prilosec (generic omeprazole) is far cheaper. Save your hard earned money. ...Read more
