Usually Amoxicillin: Amoxicillin is a very good broad spectrum antibiotic. Low cost and typically works well -so long as you are not allergic. Although if the infection is due to acute periodontal disease, the initial treatment could be Arestin (tetracycline family) placed into the gumline pocket. ...Read moreSee 3 more doctor answers

Possibly: You don't know if you have an infection, do you? Taking antibiotics when you don't have an infection is totally useless, and taking antibiotics if you do have a dental infection will not fix the tooth. You still need to see a dentist for care, so the sooner you call the sooner you will feel better.. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
I'm taking augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate) (amoxi clav)&Dymista nasal spray for sinus infection, can I take lansoprazole to prevent intestinale trouble caused by antibiotic?
Probably: For simple antibiotic related diarrhea it would be ok to take Imodium (loperamide) for a brief period only. If diarrhea is very severe while on those antibiotics, a superinfection with clostridium difficile would be suspected and this is not treated with Imodium (loperamide) but with flagyl or vancomycin as it is a serious complication and is diagnosed with a stool culture.Check Anyone on antibiotics with severe diarrhea ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers

Not necessarily: Both medications are commonly prescribed for sinus infections but Augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate) tends to be more effective in covering bacteria that Amoxicillin does not cover well. Augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate) is essentially Amoxicillin plus clavulanic acid. ...Read more

I just finished amoxicillin for strep/sinus issued last week now I'm all congested again! Thinking its allergy related, any OTC could help?
Consider consult: Hard to know without more information. Allergy is possible, but so is inflammation from a partially treated infection. Sometimes a longer course of antibiotics is necessary for true bacterial sinus infection, particularly if there was initial improvement. Sometimes a short prednisone course is given to resolve inflammation and improve efficacy of the antibiotic. Consider a consult to discuss. ...Read more

Is it alright to take an OTC cough syrup while taking an antibiotic? I went into see a doctor today and was diagnosed with bronchitis. I took my first dose of amoxicillin at 4pm cdt. I am having one of those hacking coughing attacks almost to the point of
Yes: Amoxicillin should be compatible with otc cough meds. May take a few days to see improvement. Honey has been shown to be equally effective as dextromethorphin in suppressing cough. Make sure that otc is not just Guaifenesin which only thins mucous. Could do dextromethorphin and honey together. Could go to Codeine syrup if cough dry. Don't stop cough completely if mucous coming to clear lung. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
Is it ok to take an OTC sleep aid while on 10mg of prednisone, three times a day I have tonsillitis, so i was put on prednisone and amoxicillin. The prednisone has caused me lack of sleep.
Most : Most otc sleep aids contain diphenhydramine, if this is what you plan on taking, then there is no interaction between the two (diphenhydramine and prednisone) and you should be fine. Insomnia is usually not a side effect of prednisone; consider other reasons. If this problem persists bring it to your doctor's attention. Best of luck. ...Read more
My 16-month old has diaper rash from amoxicillin prescription for uri. Also rx'd prednisone. Can the pred. Help pain for rash, or should OTC ibuprof better?
Use an ointment.: The pain of the diaper rash is mainly caused by the diaper and the urine and stool touching the rash. Coat his bottom with a thick film of zinc oxide paste (found in most over the counter diaper ointments) to protect it. If that does not help, then Ibuprofen is a good pain reliever. You should give the Prednisone as prescribed - it should never be given outside of what it says on the label. ...Read more
I was sick 3 wks ago- doc prescribed amoxicillin. improved, but have had a post nasal drip ,throat clearing and cough . What otc nasal spray is best?
Viral or allergic ca: The cause of your post nasal drip and subsequent throat clearing is almost certainly mucus generated in your nose secondary to either an allergy or a viral infection. Your response to the amoxicillin was most likely serendipitous. There are many nasal sprays. There is no one best spray. There are pluses and minuses to each. Discuss them with your doctor. ...Read more
I am on prednisone & augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate) for bronchitis & a sinus infection. I have such a congested horrible cough. Im also an asthmatic. Is there any remedies or OTC meds that would help the congested cough?
A few ideas: Your medications sound appropriate for your diagnoses. What i did not hear you mention was that you are using your asthma inhalers regularly. This is key, of course, for your lung health. Also inhalation therapy of steam scented with menthol or herbs can be helpful for both lungs and sinuses. And have an adult try percussion-lightly pounding your chest with a cupped palm to loosen the phlegm. ...Read moreSee 3 more doctor answers
Need more info: I'm not sure if you mean "how long do the pills stay potent?" or "how long after you take them will they still cure something?" antibiotic pills can remain potent for a couple of years after their expiration date. Amoxicillin stays in the bloodstream at effective levels for less than a day after the last dose. It is a short acting antibiotic, and is usually dosed 2-3 times a day for that reason. ...Read more
