How is osteoporosis diagnosed?

How is osteoporosis diagnosed?

Bone density testing: The best test is a bone density test (known as a dxa scan). This painless test measures the density of your bones. Your doctor uses this test to predict the risk of bone fracture in the future. Sometimes a spine or hip xray can show fractures of your spine/vertebra which can indicate undiagnosed osteoporosis but usually the first test is the dxa scan. ...Read more

Positive, intense uptake on bone scan, lose spinal hardware, bone marrow edema , family history, paternal taking Forteo to strengthen bones. ??ideas?

Positive, intense uptake on bone scan, lose spinal hardware, bone marrow edema , family history, paternal taking Forteo to strengthen bones. ??ideas?

For one: You probably should remove the hardware. Increased uptake is informing you there is bone activity. You don't state on what phase. This could indicate a fracture or infection.... The doctor should have a clinical suspicion of what he is looking for. If removing the hardware a bone biopsy can be performed if suspecting infection. ...Read more

Dr happy with alendronate 70mg & ca -d supplement for severe osteopenia (t-2.3) in spine. Would strontium citrate supplement be helpful too?

Strontium: To my knowledge strontium (ranelate not citrate) is not an approved osteoporosis drug in the usa. Alendronate is a good and safe drug. What matters is how you take it - with water not food - and how long you have been taking it. Standard procedure is to check your t-score every 2 years and many of us recommend stopping therapy if consecutive results show no change. ...Read more

Bipolar disorder -- k2 vitamin ? Can we use for anxiety and nervousness..?

No: There is no evidence that any vitamin supplement helps alleviate symptoms associated with any psychiatric illness. How does the bone density test define osteoporosis?

Dr. James Chu Dr. Chu
3 doctors agreed:

Only partly: The dexa scan gives the bone mineral density at the hips, spine and forearm. These scores can predict osteoporosis: 't-score' of less than -2.5 is considered osteoporosis. However, many people suffer osteoporosis fractures despite having better bone densities. So, we also use other factors: age, ethnicity, size, family history, prior fractures, smoking, alcohol, other conditions to predict risks. ...Read more

Can lithium deficiency lead to mood disorder i.E. Mania ?

Unconfirmed: Human diseases possibly related to deficient lithium intake have not been well studied. Still, lithium is probably an essential nutrient present in foods and water supply. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11838882 there is no direct relationship between "low" lithium and mania -- yet it's true that lithium is an established mood stabilizer in bipolar disorder & has antidepressant action too. ...Read more
