What is osgood-schlatter disease?

Age

Open-uri20140331-15989-13cf07a
This is inflammation of a muscle attachment point on the tibia in adolescents that are physically active.Reducing the amount of leg work with sports (running, lifting, etc.) can help it calm down as can use of antiinflammatory agents like ibuprofen. Rarely a kid will need a soft splint and crutches until walking can resume. As the kid gets older, growth stops as does OSD.

What is Strickland protocol for osgood schlatter disease?

Unproven

It is a way to treat Osgood Schlatters but you have to buy the book describing how it works from Jenny Strickland who developed the treatment. I am unable to find any peer reviewed articles written that substantiate her claims. I have looked it over and there is nothing recommended that would hurt the young athlete. Depending on the cost of the book it might be the same as a co-pay at PT.

Is Swimming Good Or Bad For Osgood Schlatter Disease .. ?

Good

Open-uri20121220-3501-1nqzqrr
Osgood-Schlatter is a condition involving a portion of the tibial growth plate at the insertion of the patellar tendon. It is associated with tight quadriceps (especially the rectus femoris). The best treatment is lots of stretching, NSAIDs and RICE. It resolves when the growth plates close. Swimming is unlikely to exacerbate the issue and is a good way to stay active

Does having osgood-schlatter disease stop you from growing?

No, can be painful

Stringio
Osgood-Schlatters disease is a result of growing fast enough so as to disallow the tibial tubercle to unite with the rest of the leg bone (tibia) during periods of excessive loading. Fragment excision (arthroscopic in my hands) can rid one's knee of the anterior kneeling pain if necessary.
