Consult your doctor: It is common for one to experience pain for several months following an ankle injury. Ankle braces and aircasts may be of benefit in the initial phase to help immobilize and support the area. Later on, the ankle will need range of motion exercises to improve strengthening. Consult your physician to see when you should stop using the brace. ...Read more

Do acrylic retainers -used after braces are off- release any sort of toxic chemicals?

Do acrylic retainers -used after braces are off- release any sort of toxic chemicals?

No: Unless you are allergic to acrylic. Have your family doctor or allergist test you if you have a problem. In 40+ years I have never seen case. What can be a problem is not cleaning the retainers and having a contact infection. Take retainers out and brush gently when you brush your teeth. Also 1x/day in denture cleanser is a good idea. ...Read more

Are there differences in orthodontic/orthopedic outcome that can be expected using MARA appliance & braces vs. braces & elastics to correct an overjet?

Are there differences in orthodontic/orthopedic outcome that can be expected using MARA appliance & braces vs. braces & elastics to correct an overjet?

Gold standard: Gold standard is braces. More important than the hardware, however, is the operating system.. A fully qualified Orthodontic Specialist would know, for example, that you can't do Orthopedic Treatment on a non-growing individual. Please don't try to self-diagnose and treatment plan. See an expert, an Orthodontic Specialist, who will be able to properly guide you. ...Read more

What will happen if my scar tissue in the way of my growth plate? Its on my right hand wrist I have a brace on now till i see a orthopedic

I : I assume someone has told you that you have a growth plate that may be scarred. What cold happen is that the bone with the scarred growth plate does not grow as quickly, in the proper direction or as long as it should if the growth plate were normal. What occurs due to that depends upon, the extent of the difference, what part of the body is affected and at what age it occurs relative to the end of normal skeletal growth for that particular bone. ...Read more

My son tore his acl so his orthopedic doctor gave him a brace to prevent him move his knee. But for some reason he limps with it. Why does he limp?

ACL tears: His knee is still unstable and with each step it moves in an abnormal and painful way. The body is trying to protect the cartilage in his knee by keeping him from full weight bearing on this knee. He should have a reconstruction done as soon as medically possible. ...Read more

I hurt my knee at work, after seeing an orthopedic he put me in a brace and physical therapy in a few weeks... is it possible that my hip, calf muscle, and akle hurt now due to my knee injury?

Knee Injury: Absolutely! The lower extremity acts as a unit. A movement group called a kinetic chain. Muscles and tendons go from buttock and hip to knee. Muscles and tendons around knee influence the ankle. Without knowing the full extent of the injury can only remark that it is not unusual to hurt above and below the main area of injury. ...Read more

I went to the orthopedic np for knee pain. My MRI and x-rayshowed patellar tilt and hematoma. Treatment suggested:knee brace/warm compress. Should i go to a sports med or an orthopedic md for second opinion?

Need good exam: If the tilt was the only problem, fixing the mechanics that caused it would be the first step. In most athletes, this is working on the quad to hamstring strength ratio and strengthening the gluteus medius (many accidently over strengthen the itb/tfl, the other hip abductors, which can worsen the problem). Reasonable to start with non-op sports med, and if hematoma needs to be drained, see ortho. ...Read more

Seek further care: Hand and wrist fractures can be tricky to diagnose and treatment can vary quite a bit, depending on which bone is fractured.
