Strain?: Did you lift or strain? This can cause rib/side pains. Are you coughing or short of breath? Think of bronchitis or pneumonia. Are you having nausea, stomach pain or upper back pain? Could be gallbladder. As you can see, there are many possible causes. Monitor: The usual cause of superficial lump is lypoma. Rarely could it be a small bony growth or neuroma. A lypoma is usually painless, freely mobile, and remains stable over time. Bone spur is hard, fixed and tender on palpation. Neuroma may or may not painful but usually fixed.
