Mirena (levonorgestrel) bleeding: Irregular bleeding is an almost universal side effect the 1st few weeks after Mirena (levonorgestrel) insertion. After that periods tend to lighten with 25% having no periods by 12 months. Irregular bleeding can be annoying but it does not mean that the method is not working. Adjustment changes: Most likely, the uterus/body is making minor adjustments related to the IUD. The Prostaglandins (pain mediators) associated with semen also add to any discomfort sometimes. If you are comfortable feeling for the IUD strings, you should do that to confirm continued proper placement of the IUD. Otherwise, especially if the symptoms are persistent, get with your OB/GYN to confirm placement. ...Read more

3 yrs of the mirena (levonorgestrel) in and I usually spot light pink blood before my cyclethis time around on the first day of spotting it was dark brown almost black?

Old blood: Dark brown almost black spotting is normal with progestin predominant bleeding like you get with the Mirena (levonorgestrel). This is very common and is usually thought of as old blood. Unless you start doing this more often or your pattern of bleeding increases, it isn't anything to worry about. Hope this helps. ...Read more

I have had my mirena (levonorgestrel) for about 2 years w/no problems but have been spotting (brownish blood discharge) very light for 3 weeks. No pain. Is this common?

Common: One of mirena's best features is that you will often get no periods or very light periods with the trade off that you get unplanned spotting from time to time. 2nd month on Mirena (levonorgestrel) not due for period for 4 days, spotted today red blood for 2 hrs, is it a reason for concern?

No: The Mirena (levonorgestrel) can lead to irregular or non-existant periods or some low-grade spotting all of the time - if you are sure it is still in place then take a pregnancy test to be 100% sure it is not a pregnancy and then your body has to work out the cycle with the iud in place

Melena: Do you mean melena. mirena (levonorgestrel) is an intruterine device. In medicine, melena or mel├Žna refers to the black, "tarry" feces that are associated with upper gastrointestinal bleeding. The black color is caused by the hemoglobin in the blood being altered by digestive chemicals and intestinal bacteria. The blood comes from the upper GI tract. Blood from lower would be bright red. ...Read more

Have had mirena (levonorgestrel) for 2 years, and I don't have periods. Is this normal? Where does the blood and egg go since no period? Thinking of having it removed...

Normal: It is normal to not have periods are mirena (levonorgestrel). That is one of its main benefits. The Progesterone prevents the formation of blood so there is none or only a minimal amount to pass. The egg is simply reabsorbed. Remember a cell is 1 cell. If you scratch your skin you will have several hundred thousand cells under your nail. An egg is very very small. ...Read more

Bleeding w Mirena (levonorgestrel): Mirena (levonorgestrel) IUD helps to decrease menstrual bleeding.
