Can you please describe the negative side effects from taking oral meds for toe fungus that won't go away?

Side effects: Different medications have different side effects. The medication that I use for my patients with your problem carries the risk of liver damage. To lower the risk, we draw blood to ensure the patient's liver is healthy before we start the medication and after several weeks to ensure that no damage is occuring. ...Read more

Is using ketoconazole shampoo the same as is oral? Does it have lots of side effects? Cancer? What if I want kids one day? Any other fungus safe shamp

Shampoo is safer: Ketoconazole shampoo is much safer than taking ketoconazole by mouth. This is because, when ingested, many of your body systems and organs are exposed to the drug. When you’re using shampoo, only your skin is exposed. Absorption of the drug by the skin is minimal, so there typically are not side effects. The shampoo should not affect your risk of cancer of ability to have children. ...Read more

Is oral Lamisil (terbinafine) worth taking despite the possible side effects? What's the worst that could happen if I don't treat my toenail fungus?

Maybe: Lamisil (terbinafine) is actually a much safer drug than people think. The risk of liver problems is really quite small. I do, however, recommend a baseline blood test (liver profile and complete blood count) prior to starting with a repeat test about 6 weeks into the therapy. Normal course of treatment for toenails is 3 months. ...Read more

Fungus on my behind?

Treat and Evaluate: Most fungal infections of the skin respond to 10 days of treatment with over-the-counter anti-fungal creams. The question is why do you have that type of infection there. If the infection doesn't respond or is getting worse, you need to be seen by an internist or a dermatologist.
