Sure can!: Bacteria are great space invaders if given the opportunity from mouth to mouth. Mouth to genitals will not give your vagina "strep" throat as it is a different "orifice". Alpha streptococcus is commonly found in the vagina and beta strep is the pathogen for strep throat. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Had sore throat, hi fever, swollen gums, canker sores, aches. Diagnosed as bacterial tonsilitis, given amox. 5 days later, only fever+throat is better?
Canker Sores: The cause of canker sores is not clear. It is most likely due to your body's own defenses following an attack or injury. They go away by themselves. Most medications treat the discomfort of the sore, not the actual sore. An antibiotic will only treat a bacterial attack. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers

Clear fluids: Give small amounts of pedialyte of chicken broth sweetened with a small amount of sugar to prevent dehydration. If you start with 1/2 tsp every 10-15 minutes you can often give enough fluids to prevent or treat dehydration. Increase amount of 1/2 tsp every hour or so as tolerated. Your child sounds like one the pediatrician should see. May want to do a rapid strep screen & assess for dehydration. ...Read more

1yo has high fever, diarrhea, cough and runny nose for days. Not improving despite medication. What's wrong? Virus or bacteria?
Prob virus: With that constellation of symptoms, it is likely a virus; what is concerning is the high fever and diarrhea. If his temperatures are about 104, he runs the risk of febrile seizures; if you can't keep him hydrated enough, he runs the risk of dehydration, fast. If it's been going on for days, i would take him to see a doctor. ...Read more
Possibly: Without active lesions it would be very rare to transmit this infection to the genitals. It is possible to have a small lesion and not be aware of it and thus transmit it. The two types are so very similar that oral herpes can cause genital herpes. If you have herpes in your vagina you may not be aware but you are almost certain to see a herpes lesion on the penis. Genital herpes can infect mouth. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Oral what?: When I was resident at a county hospital, we treated what appeared to be an outbreak of oral gonorrhea amongst people your age with the same symptoms who had oral sex (culture confirmed). There are still some unanswered questions- mainly the thought that a healthy immune system should prevent this. But for what it's worth, I thought I would mention this experience with a clinical "zebra." ...Read more

Can herpes that causes innocent oral fever blisters & cold sores be sexually transited to someone else as genital herpes?
Herpes - HSV1 & HSV2: Yes - unfortunately there can be cross over between the 2 different types of herpes. These viruses are always adapting and looking for 'new opportunities' and although traditionally, HSV-1 kept to the mouth/nose and HSV-2 kept to the genital tract, there can be 'back and forth' transmission of these viruses in susceptible patients. This is a reminder to keep ALL safe sex practices in mind! ...Read more

Not sure: Fever blisters or hsv i viral outbreaks can be shortened by immediate use of zovirax, (acyclovir) but if not taken before 48 or so hours into it, it will be of little benefit. I do not know the specific body clearance for the drug, but as it is dosed every 4 hours, i imagine it is cleared rapidly. Medication most helpful if you feel an outbreak coming on, waiting only reduces effectiveness. Good luck! ...Read more

Hope you don't: What are the chances that you acquired an STD from someone? You would likely know if you had gonorrhea. Could be-: If repeated HIV testing is (-), and oral hairy leukoplakia (OHL) is present, then you don't have HIV. You have another type of viral infection . EBV is certainly a leading diagnosis- there are specific blood tests that can determine if you have an active or past infection. If the OHL is a soft diagnosis, consider other viruses such as Cytomegalovirus (CMV) and Human Herpesvirus-6 (HHV-6). ...Read more
