When treating PID, is intravenous infusion(cefoxitin/cefotetan) + oral pill therapy more effective than injection(ceftriaxon) + oral pills therapy?

When treating PID, is intravenous infusion(cefoxitin/cefotetan) + oral pill therapy more effective than injection(ceftriaxon) + oral pills therapy?

Severe PID: For severe PID (lots of pain, high fever, etc), IV treatment for 2-3 days (sometimes longer), e.g. with cefoxitin or cefotetan, is preferable to a single ceftriaxone shot plus oral treatment. But each case is different; ask your doctor and follow her advice. Good luck! ...Read more

Chelation (Definition)

Chelation is the name for administering a substance to remove heavy metals from the body. It can be an important treatment for lead poisoning or iron overload. It is also touted by some for the treatment of autism spectrum disorders, based on the idea that these children may have toxicity from mercury or other heavy metals. However, there is little evidence to support this hypothesis. Chelation agents bind metals nonspecifically and may result in dangerously low levels of calcium, iron, and magnesium, in addition to toxic heavy metals. Thus, ...Read more

Does chelation therapy work for atherosclerosis?

Does chelation therapy work for atherosclerosis?

Chelation therapy: No chelation therapy doesnot reverse atherosclerosis, chelation is supposed to bind toxins for elimination through the kidneys. Atherosclerosis is integrated into the arteries in a matrix of calcium, cholesterol, platelets, fibrinogen and other substances. If chelation freed the plaques they would clog the kidneys and shut down normal filtration causing kidney failure, emboli or strokes. ...Read more

Can chelation therapy help someone with autism?

Can chelation therapy help someone with autism?

NO: The ama does not endorse chelation therapy for behavioral issues because of potentially horrible side effects including death. There is no sound evidence whatsoever that it even helps behavioral issues. For proven heavy metal poisoning there may be an indication. Otherwise it appears to be quackery. There is no scientific evidence that heavy metals play a role in childhood autism. ...Read more

How effective are "detoxamine edta suppositories" as chelation therapy for removing heavy metals and plaque from the blood?

How effective are "detoxamine edta suppositories" as chelation therapy for removing heavy metals and plaque from the blood?

Effective for metals: More research is needed but there is evidence that detoxamin suppositories can help remove heavy metals; whether they remove plaque is still to be determined but removing lead should lead to plaque reduction. Oral edta is only about 5% absorbed. Research has shown detoxamin is about 35% absorbed but stays in the body a much longer time than IV edta. Please see my comment for more information. ...Read more

Is chelation therapy truly effective in removing heart-arterial blocks?

Not for 100% blocks: Although chelation therapy is very effective for improving blood flow, it will not "unclog" a completely blocked artery. However, atherosclerosis does not effect single arteries. It is a systemic problem. Therefore, for those with complete or near-complete blockages, i recommend stents or bypass, followed by chelation to improve blood-flow throughout the body and prevent progression. ...Read more

Is photodynamic therapy an effective treatment for lung cancer?

Is photodynamic therapy an effective treatment for lung cancer?

Photodynamic therapy may play a limited role in lung cancer treatment — generally complementing, rather than replacing, other forms of treatment: Photodynamic therapy may be an option for treating superficial non-small cell lung cancers that haven't spread beyond the lungs and those that are located in areas easily reached with the tools used during the treatment. Photodynamic therapy begins with the injection of a light-sensitive medication into a vein. One to three days later, the doctor shines light of a certain wavelength onto the tumor from inside the body — typically using a thin, lighted tube called a bronchoscope, which is passed through the mouth into the lungs. The light destroys the cells that have absorbed the light-sensitive medication. After photodynamic therapy, your whole body is sensitive to light. Generally you need to avoid any exposure to bright light, including the sun, for up to eight weeks after treatment. Photodynamic therapy isn't effective for cancer that has spread beyond the lung or tumors that can't be reached by the bronchoscope. ...Read more
