I have one leg swollen but sometimes they switch - one leg swollen and then the other - what causes this?

Drainage problem: Leg swelling is always a result of an inability to drain the fluid from the leg back to the circulation. An alternating cause of venous compression at work, in how you sit, or sleep should be investigated. ...Read more

The behind the knee of one leg is bigger than the other one. Assymetrical. The knee itself is not swollen. What does that mean? Causes? Is it normal?

Asymmetry: You will probably need to see a physician to get a better answer. In some patients we see Baker's cysts, fat deposits etc etc. We are also born with asymmetrical patterns. Best thing is to obtain a history and physical from your physician and that way she can give you her thoughts. Have a great day. ...Read more

It: It is unclear whether the three are physically in proximity, where on the leg they are located, what associated medical problems you may have and what the inciting cause was (e.g. Trauma?) in any case, what you may have is a furuncle, i.e. Boil. In some patients, the hair follicle get infected, sometimes called folliculitis - this may lead to a deeper and wider skin infection called furunculosis. Carbuncles are series of abscesses in the subcutaneous tissue that drain via hair follicles and are a complication of furunculosis. Frequently developing on the back of the neck, face, armpit, thighs and buttocks, furuncles and carbuncles are caused by perspiration, friction and bacteria. People who are obese, on corticosteroid therapy, or those with defective white blood cell function may be predisposed to furuncles and carbuncles. Furuncles and carbuncles may be treated with warm compresses, which promote spontaneous drainage, as well as oral and topical antibiotics. If the redness increases, particularly if a red streak appears, then you should see your physician. ...Read more

I have about 7 mosquito bites. One on my leg is bright red and quarter size. It's not swollen just red?

Relax: Mosquito bites are red and itchy. Hydrocortisone cream will help. More potent, prescription steroid creams are more effective. You can also rub with a wet (not coated!) aspirin. Antihistamine may help: Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is a sleeping pill. Claratin, Allegra, Zyrtec are preferred with little or no sedation. Generics are equivalent and cheaper. ...Read more

Swollen pain in left rib pain in legs and back and no one can tell me why?

Consider Osteopath: I'm not sure what 'swollen pain' means-is it visible or just a 'sense' that it's swollen? In either case, there could be several reasons why you have this pain from rib dysfunction to arthritis, torn ligaments, nerve injury w/referred pain, ql spasm, etc. A proper history & physical exam, including an osteopathic hands-on exam might be able to determine the cause when other diagnostic methods fail. ...Read more

My legs have started aching at night. Now one ankle feels swollen. What could be wrong?

A lot.: You are diabetic and have neuropathy. You are on a diuretic for water retention. I would have to know more about your medical history, but leg pain at night is usually an indication of circulatory issues. Again, many factors involved, weight, blood sugar, etc. My recommendation would be to follow up with your PC or Endocrinologist who may refer you to a Vascular Doc. ...Read more

1 of my legs is always swollen. One is always bigger than the other is there a way to fix that. I had a blood clot in the leg?

Post-thrombotic snd: The first concern is that you may have a recurrence of your clot, however more likely you now have some degree of venous insufficiency -- damage to the valves in your veins from the original clot. This is easily treated by compression stockings, but you will need an ultrasound first. ...Read more

I have been experiencing leg pain, almost in my groin area on one side and a swollen lymph node on the other side, it seems to be shrinking now?

Varies: There are a number of possible causes, consider being seen. The lymph nodes are a filtering system, and lymph nodes can often become enlarged when a person develops an infection. Because there is an increased amount of nodes in the groin, this can cause pain and swelling in the groin. There are many other possible causes as well. ...Read more

Unexplained symptoms: Multiple unexplained symptoms can be quite concerning. Some answers are obtainable through healthtap but multiple unexplained symptoms with the inability to ask questions or examine is not safe. If the symptoms have been going for a while and been reviewed with a physician a second opinion could be warranted. If they are new and concerning to you, you should seek care from a medical professional. ...Read more

Skin infections: Pus filled bumps on the skin are usually the symptom of a skin infection. When they become red, warm to touch and painful it is called cellulitis. Treatment of this includes oral antibiotics and occassionally drainage. See your doctor, because resistant infections are becoming more common and require special treatment. ...Read more

Thrombophlebitis: Superficial thrombophlebitis is inflammation of a vein just under the skin, usually in the leg. A small blood clot also commonly forms in the vein, but is usually not serious. The condition usually settles and goes within 2-6 weeks. Treatments can ease pain or discomfort. Superficial thrombophlebitis is different to, and much less serious than, deep vein thrombosis. Still must be evaluated. ...Read more

My legs are swollen, especially the right one. I have a lot of pain and and some lumps. I get some relief if I walk. I am also an MS patient. Thank

GET TO DOCTOR: Many problems can cause leg swelling or edema, and this can include fluid/electrolyte imbalance, varicose veins, kidney and cardiac problems, but most worrisome is your description of the pain, which suggest a potential thrombophlebitis, which could lead to serious issues. Do not delay, this is not your ms, but a very different problem. Best of luck. ...Read more

My 1 yr old has swollen bumps all own her leg, on her foot, and one on her hand. Wasn't swollen yesterday. What is this?

Are they hives?: Without looking at the bumps, it would be impossible to make a diagnosis. So these are my guesses. (1) hives due to some allergy, (2) insect bites such as mosquito bites, (3) scabies, (4) a virus infection, (5) HSP (though she is a bit too young), (6) itp (immune thrombocytopenic purpura). These are some potential diagnoses. If the bumps bother her, please take her to a doctor. You could send pics. ...Read more

I think I might have a staph infection. I had a group of red bumps on my leg and all of them but one didn't go away, now it's swollen, red, painful.?

Skin infections: You should have your leg evaluated by your doc, of which you may need an antibiotic. Till you get to see your doc, keep the area clean with soap & water, dry it & if the skin is open, use topical Neosporin, which could cut down the amount of infection. Take Aleve (naproxen) or Motrin to help with the pain and inflammation. Do not wait to see your doc, these are only temporizing measures. ...Read more

Swollen lymph node on one side of groin *3 mths after last sex. Could this be from a STI or most likely something else? No visible leg/feet cuts/sores

Swollen lymph node on one side of groin *3 mths after last sex. Could this be from a STI or most likely something else? No visible leg/feet cuts/sores

STI unlikely: The large majority of inflamed lymph nodes in the groin are not from STIs. Assuming no recent genital blisters or sores, etc, the chance of an STI is even lower. It isn't zero, and it would be prudent to have an STI checkuip, especially a syphilis blood test, if you may be at risk, like a new or potentially unsafe sex partner. And if it persists, see a doctor to look into other causes. Good luck! ...Read more

I broke my ankle Tuesday, cast thursday, returned to work Sunday, Standing on one leg for 4 hours, and when I got home my toes are bruised and swollen?

I broke my ankle Tuesday, cast thursday, returned to work Sunday, Standing on one leg for 4 hours, and when I got home my toes are bruised and swollen?

Too much standing: The prolonged standing is causing swelling because the casted leg is immobile. The bruising may be from where your toes are rubbing against the top of the cast. I would suggest that you request a stool or chair at work so that you can elevate your leg. If that is not an option or you cannot be off from work, then you should elevate and put ice behind your knee after work to reduce swelling ...Read more
