One Sorry In Each Nostril Or Two Sprays
I've used afrin (oxymetazoline) at bedtime four consecutive nights, two sprays/nostril. I have not used it during the day. Could I use one spray/nostril a 5th night?
One of my nostrils gets dry and cracks very often. When I use saline sprays it actually seems to make it more dry and irritated. Is that possible?
Not usually: Be sure that your saline spray is not from a hypertonic saline solution. May try a nasal gel spray or nasal gel to see if it works better. ...Read more

I heard a loud whistle from ONE nostril as I breathed out a few times. I used nasal spray, so it stopped. But should I be worried? Never heard that b4.
Nasal congestion: It is likely that something has caused that nostril to swell up causing the whistling. This may be from a cold or from allergy depending on the duration of the symptoms. If from allergy, then you likely have had some congestion for some time and developed whistling when the congestion worsens. If this has been present for more than 2 weeks and bothersome to you, see doctor. ...Read more
My gp prescribed one xyzal (levocetirizine) a day and 2 sprays of Veramyst in each nostril twice a day. Is it a normal dosage? What are the possible side effects?
Normal: Zyzal is the new zyrtec, that dose is standard. It can cause mucosal drying and some difficulty urinating in persons with enlarged prostate. The Veramyst is a nasal steroid, which can predispose tofungal infection or bleeds. None of these are common side effects, they are generally well tolerated. The doses are usual. ...Read more
I felt some pain in my ear after I used Flonase. I did two sprays in each nostril. Will the pain go away when the medication wears off?
Not expected: Flonase does not usually cause ear pain. The only thing I can think of is that you were aiming the spray directly to the back and thus hitting the eustachean tube opening but even that is an unlikely scenario. Try aiming the nozzle towards the side walls of the nose instead of the center and let me know if this helps. ...Read more
I used Flonase last night two sprays in each nostril & I don't like the feeling I got in my ears. How long does it take for medication to wear off?
Maybe a day, but...: Flonase sprayed into the nose should not cause a bad feeling in the ears. If a bad feeling happens, it may be a coincidence. Be sure the Flonase tip is not plugging the entire nostril when spraying. There is not a direct connection from the nostrils to the ears. Sometimes, we try Flonase in sinus-congestion patients to help the ears normalize their pressures if the ears seem pressurized. ...Read more

How long can a allergies last one nostril block for almost 3 months it alternate my ENT keeps saying allergies using nasal spray for 3 months now?
(1) You might have aimed the nasal spray (presumably a steroid) towards the center and not the outside direction of the nose
(2)You may have a sinus infection
(3)You may have too much allergen (indoor especially) exposure so that nothing would work.
(4) Your problem may not be allergy.
See an allergist to help you sort this out. ...Read more

My right nostril has been clogged for more than a week now. What can I do, besides using saline sprays?
Try these things:: Congestion is most often due to swollen blood vessels and fluid in the tissues lining the nose. Allergies & irritants are the most common causes. Decongestants as sprays (like afrin) or pills (like sudafed) can help but cause side effects so should be used cautiously. Prescription meds like steroid sprays and singulair (montelukast) can help too. When congestion doesn't change, a structural problem may exist. ...Read more

Can nasonex (mometasone) nasal spray make you gain weight? I use it daily. 2 sprays in each nostril? I have chronic sinusitus.
The active ingredient in Nasonex nasal spray is mometasone which is the nasal steroid least absorbed into the blood stream. Also, when looking at the side effect profile of this medication, weight gain is not on the list. So it is very unlikely that Nasonex in a normal dose (such as what you are on) causes weight gain.

Try saline.: You may first want to check with your surgeon because there are several different kinds of packing. Do not use any prescription nose sprays until your ENT surgeon says it's OK to do so. ...Read more

My gp prescribed 1 spray (27.5 mg of fluticasone furoate) in each nostril twice daily. Will this cause more side effects? Is the dose normal? Thanks
Veramyst: While the usual dose for Fluticasone Furoate (veramyst) is 1-2 sprays each nostril once a day for adults, it is not unusual to adjust the dose for a particular person's needs. Higher doses may help initially, then many docs will step down to the lowest effective dose. In general nasal steroid sprays are pretty safe and significant side effects would not be seen at twice a day. ...Read more

I have a cold, and I used afrin nasal spray. I sniffled up after using it, & I felt some driplets go into my lungs, from my nostrils. Is this bad?
This side effect: From nasal sprays is expected and does not cause problems. The constituents in Afrin and other nasal sprays do not cause lung inflammation or infection, similar to the constituents used in inhalers. As, or more often, people swallow excess Afrin which is more of a problem. Follow administration directions explicitly, especially not taking for more than a few days at a time. You can be "hooked." ...Read more
