Have had a cold, yellow phlegm, slight cough. Normal to have pressure behind one ear with this? Had breast cancer and am afraid of brain mets?!
Yes!: Absolutely. The eustachian tube, or the passageway that connects the ear to the back of the nasal passage, can become inflamed or clogged with allergies. This can lead to increased inner ear pressure, either on one or both sides. By relieving the nasal congestion/swelling, typically the ear improves. ...Read more

Can't get his ear to open up was on flight 28, 000 ft when the cabin pressure, they had emt exam him but he still can't hear fully out of one ear
How: How long has his ear been plugged? What did the ENT physician find when he looked in the ear? (fluid, retracted eardrum only?). Has he had problems with recurrent ear infections in the past or associated with flying? If its just a retracted ear drum then he has a pressure lock of his eustacian tube. The treatment would be afrin (oxymetazoline) spray, valsalva type maneuvers (trying to gently pop ear by blowing nose while it is pinched shut), and your best friend, -tincture of time. If this doesn't resolve within a week I would go back to your ENT for futher recommendations. ...Read more
How might an issue be treated where one ear cannot adjust to air pressure because childhood ear tube came out improperly, causing eardrum damage?
Need ENT consult: The pressure behind the ear drum is controlled by your Eustachian tube, which connects the base of the middle ear space to the back of your throat. How or why you think a childhood ear tube has anything to do with that is unclear. It should not. Scarred ear drums or drums containing a hole have no direct effect on the pressure within. ...Read more
I have a ear infection in only one ear but pressure sometimes goes from that ear to the non infected ear is that normal?
Eustachian tube issu: The pressure you likely feel relates to poor function in your Eustachian tubes during this process. The tube drains middle ear mucous and allows air to enter during normal function. To have the infection, tube swelling trapped mucous which became infected from throat germs. Yawning can sometimes help reopen the tube and allow pressure to equalize in the good ear. In time all should heal. ...Read more

When sitting to standing I get pressure in my head and pulsatile tinnitus in one ear. History of allergy issues but could this be something worse?
See your MD: The best advice to give is for you to see your MD in person. You need to have a careful history and a full exam, including orthostatic blood pressure measurements. Be careful about giving your own diagnosis such as pulsatile tinnitus in your description and instead describe your symptoms. Good luck. ...Read more
Ear pressure. Doc sees nothing, tymp is normal. Pressure is only in one ear and is slightly better, only bad during cold/allergies. Should I get tube?
I probably wouldn't: It sounds like your symptoms are fairly mild. I would focus more on treating your allergies, and then use a decongestant if you have a cold as long as your blood pressure isn't elevated. If your tympanogram is normal andyour symptoms are getting better I would hold off on an ear tube. ...Read more
I have endolymphatic hydrops in one ear. The meniett releaves the pressure but makes me very dizzy for 48 hours. My symptoms started with using new in-ear headphones. Could it be a plf?
Possible: Hydrops and plf both can cause fluctuating ear pressure, and hearing loss so may be hard to distinguish. Another cause could be superior canal dehiscence but the hearing loss in this condition is usually conductive. Consider getting fistula test from audiologist. In plf condition usually begins with blow to ear, major baropressure event, heavy straining such as hard cough or lifting heavy objec. ...Read more

I have an ear infection that has caused pressure and loss of hearing in one ear. Almost done with zpack and predisone (1 day left). What is next step?
I'd give it time: If you are just finishing your zpac you are early in the recovery process. All purulent otitis media will have transient hearing reduction in the involved ear for up to 2-4 wks. If your symptoms are gradually improving, no action is needed. If the symptoms are unchanged, a revisit with your pcp is in order. ...Read more

Pulsing in right ear off and on. It's not like a heartbeat, its more of a pulsating sound. I have a cold and some sinus pressure in my head.?
Pulsations in ear: If the pulsating sensation in the ear is recent and related to the sinus pressure in your head and cold symptoms, it is to be expected. A cold commonly is associated with dysfunction of the eustachian tube connecting the nose and ear. A visit to your ear nose and throat doctor will likely be helpful because prescription medications to reduce inflammation will also affect the ear pulsations. ...Read more

My left ear besomes extremly painful, and throbbing only when I sleep on my left side. I wake up because of the pain feels like there is so much pressure.
Without: Without knowing your age, obtaining a detailed history, and performing a proper head and neck exam, it is impossible to make a concrete diagnosis. Speculatively, you may have temporomandibular joint syndrome ("tmj"). This often refers pain to the ear since the joint lies directly in front of the ear and pain would often be made worse by lateral pressure on the jaw. I agree with the other respondent, you should obtain an ENT evaluation. ...Read more
