Is it safe to switch to Pepcid (famotidine) from omeprazole for heartburn?

Yes, but...: Pepcid (famotidine) does not control acid production as well as Omeprazole does. Before switching, be sure you are following anti-reflux measures well. Also, before switching, I would contact your doctor who is treating you for reflux, to be sure that he/she agrees that this is a reasonable approach for you. Otherwise, good luck. ...Read more

I have been prescribed omeprazole 20mg, it that to strong of a dose, as I don't have many bouts with reflux and heartburn as I originally did?

The usual dose.: 20 mg of omeprazole is an average dose. Very often patients need to remain on maintenance therapy to keep acid reflux under control.
