Omega 3 Fish Oil Vs Chia Seed
Is taking 1g of fish oil omega-3 similar to taking 1g of chia seed's omega-3 as both are called omega-3 ?
Uncertain: I googled chia seed's fish oil and discovered that there are many formulations so i can't really answer your question. What you really want is about 900 mg of dha (a type of fish oil) so i advise you carefully read the label. The problem is that many herbal supplements really don't tell you what you're getting. You should also be aware that fish oil is not proven to be beneficial. ...Read more
Fish oils contain two active omega-3 fatty acids, dha and epa. Most fish oil products contain both dha and epa, but supplements enriched in dha or epa are available. Omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to significantly reduce sudden cardiac death. Some studies also indicate the potential for benefits in dementia and risk of heart attack. The omega-3 content of cold water ...Read more
I have been taking 1000mg fish oil as well as flax or chia daily for years. Is this safe? Ends up being around 2000mg or so total omega 3. Too much?
Omega 3:6 ratio: Most people do not get enough omega 3 in their diet and get too much omega 6. As to whether or not fish oil in combination with other plant sources of omega3 is too much depends on the context of a persons diet overall. Excess fish oil can have a blood thinning effect as well. This that also needs to be considered in the context of ones medical history. ...Read more
Doc wants me to take three 300mg of krill oil daily after my omega 3 test came back. I had been taking 1 krill plus a fish oil daily. Is this unusual?
EPA ; DHA: Fish oil and krill oil have 2 major components: epa and dha. Generally people need at least 1-2 grams of epa, and at least 500 mg dha daily. The preparations you were using may not have delivered this much of each component in the capsules you were taking, so you needed more. Please know that if you eat wild alaskan salmon, sardines, etc at least twice each week, you may not need supplements. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
I started adding 2 tbl of chia seeds to my morning smoothie... Will i be overdoing the omega's if i take fish oil as well?
EPA: We all need two essential fatty acids in our diet but they have to be processed in the body to produce important metabolites that play a part in inflammation. Fish oil provides epa (eicosapentoic acid) that "dodges" the processing mechanism, thus providing a "ready made" metabolite that acts as an anti-inflammatory. This is very complex chemistry and is the simplest explanation that i can offer. ...Read more
Much debated: There are many claims regarding the beneficial effects of fish oils, but there are few randomized blinded clinical trials testing these observational claims. Fish oils lower triglycerides, and are indicated to do so, so as to prevent pancreatitis , however no studies support this recommendation. At low dose they may have cardiovascular benefits, but recent data is less compelling than older data. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Probably at your age: A new study out of france shows that it can improve the cognitive functioning of young people. However, in the elderly, especially elderly women, the results have been somewhat disappointing. That is not to say that people should not take them because the brain needs them for other functions as well. www.forbes.com/sites/daviddisalvo/2012/10/29/new-study... ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Won't hurt: There are many health benefits from Omega-3 fish oils. They have anti-inflammatory properties and are great for cardiovascular, neurologic and eye health. However, chalazions are generally considered bacterial in nature and usually require antibiotics in some form for resolution. Warm compresses may help. ...Read moreSee 3 more doctor answers

I'm 30. I've taken omega 3 fish oil, once a day, for one month.Today i had severe pain for 3h as usual, 1st day. What does it mean?Should i continue?
Many ones: Most supplements are now pretty carefully screened for toxins from bioconcentration and such. You need to look at the epa and dha components as well as how many capsules to take to get that amount. No particular type is superior, to the contrary of the opinion of every fish oil capsule seller. ...Read more
Several good but...: About 2 grams /day. One should choose a fish oil supplement wisely as some brands are much better than others- make sure it's purified ; is in the "true triglyceride" form. My favorites are nordic naturals and omegavail by designs for health.
