Eczema: Atopic dermatitis is our fancy term for eczema. Check out http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/eczema/basics/definition/con-20032073 for more info. Weak topical steroids are available OTC w/o prescription to decrease inflammation but shouldn't be used for extended prolonged periods of time. Does anyone use protopic ointment for eczema and other skin conditions? I heard there were some dangers.

Does anyone use protopic ointment for eczema and other skin conditions? I heard there were some dangers.

Don't worry.: There is no credible evidence that Protopic ointment causes skin cancer in humans. There is a warning label in the package insert, but it is based on data from mice who were *fed* huge quantities of the active ingredient. So if you are a mouse who loves to eat protopic, you might have a problem; if you are a human who is applying it to your skin in reasonable amounts, don't worry about it. ...Read more

Just started taking Triamcinalone ointment for eczema and now one of my neck lymph nodes is swollen. Is this a side effect? Should I be worried?

Unlikely.: Triamcinolone is mid potency steroid. Over a long period of time it could potentially reduce your immune system fighting infection so theoretically it could lead to enlarged lymph nodes but it would take a really long time. So I would guess you are also having an infection, and with eczema superinfection with bacteria is not uncommon. See doctor if eczema getting worse or any non-healing lesions ...Read more

Can topical steroid ointments for eczema have any affect whatsoever on tendon disorders? Recovering from levaquin-induced bilateral Achilles damage.

No direct linkage: Topical steroids act locally for the most part. Ask your physician who prescribed the specific medication to make sure there is no known tendon-related side effects, especially since you have already had Levaquin (levofloxacin) induced tendon trouble in the past. ...Read more

Work close w/ Dr!: Watch for unusual bleeding, severe abdominal pain, dizziness, lightheadedness, or black, tarry stools. Which ointment is best for eczema?

Which ointment is best for eczema?

Vanicream: I really like Vanicream but Cetaphil and Eucerin are all good options. In addition avoid long hot showers and harsh and drying cleansers like Ivory, Irish Spring, or Lever 2000. Apply fragrance-free moisturizer like Vanicream immediately after shower to damp skin. For break-through itch Sarna lotion can be added. Topical steroid ointments are prescribed depending on severity of eczema flare. ...Read more
