Oily Stool When Taking Metformin
Metformin & diet pil: Metformin or not, i feel the best way to lose weight is not by dieting or a pill, but by changing your lifestyle to a healthier one. You don't need a drastic diet. Make small changes. Eat the right portions, eat 3-5 small meals a day, cut back on carbs and sugars, increase lean protein/veggie/fruit/water intake, & start doing some cardiovascular exercise. Diet pills are not the answer. ...Read more

Stomach pain: Your symptoms of abdominal pain nor brown discharge probably not secondary the medicine, It may be a coincidence of things happening at the same time. You tolerated the tradjenta (linagliptin) initially. Have it checked out for ongoing Gastritis, ulcer etc which might be causing your symptoms. ...Read more

Side effects to meds: Both metformin and voglibose have gastrointestinal side effects. Metformin typically causes diarrhea, but can also cause abdominal bloating and discomfort. Voglibose is an Alpha glucosidase inhibitor. It works by slowing absorption of glucose in the gut. Excess gas and bloating is the most common side effect. ...Read more

I'm constipated w/ 3 BMs per week regardless of water/fiber intake. When I take magnesium 500mg BMs are daily. What is the problem if mg solves this?
Constipation: If this constipation is a significant change from your usual bowel pattern, and especially if you have associated abdominal discomfort or blood in your stools, there would be cause for concern. However three normal bm's a week may be normal for you. Taking magnesium is a simple way to increase your intestinal motility. Consult a gastroenterologist if you still have concerns, however. ...Read more

No Magnesium Citrate: Hello Shawn Please don't take magnesium citrate to treat constipation. Magnesium citrate is a class C drug regarding pregnancy, which means a "Risk not ruled out", and that "animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus" I would suggest fiber supplementation (eg fiber one cereal), increased water intake, and gentle exercise along with stool softeners like sodium docusate. ...Read more

My mom is taking vitagliptin metformin glicanazide and voglibose. All these cause immense bloating and hardening of stools. Please advise can we do?
Unusual - See MD: Most of these medications do not cause hard stools, most commonly they do the opposite. A recent change in bowel habit in an older person is always something that should be checked up. It may not be the medications. So please advise her to see her md. In the meantime, i would suggest eating more fiber. Metamucil or similar psyllium products are quite effective, and also lower cholesterol. ...Read more

I was taking Novolin (insulin) N & Metformin twice a day before going into the hospital. There they gave me Novolin (insulin) R. How do I get back on N. I've never used R?
Stay on R: It makes more sense to be on R, as it is better for u'r sugar spikes with meals. Should take 30 min prior to u'r meals, or largest meal. N formula is a long acting Insulin and won't cover the post meal sugar spikes as well. Metformin helps with keeping baseline blood sugars down overall which, in a way, is the purpose of Novolin (insulin) N, so u'r combo of Metformin and R makes more sense. ...Read more
