Ostomy output is floating in toilet, frothy, foul fatty smell, glistening and shiny/oily in appearance. Possible causes?
Malabsorption: what you describe sounds like a failure to completely absorb in your small bowel. It can be from rapid transit, a lack of pancreatic enzymes or bile, small bowel pathology or from a bacterial overgrowth. This is more common with an ileostomy . It also may be related to your underlying reason for the ostomy such as Crohnes. See your GI doc or surgeon if it doesn't resolve soon. ...Read more

Should get evaulated: Being a 26 y/o female, it is likely that you have irritable bowel syndrome and with the frequent loose stools can cause significant anal/perianal irritation, at times bleeding from it. If you have been having symptoms for yrs, ibs is likley. If this is new, something else maybe causing your symptoms such as ulcerative colitis etc..I recommend consulting your doc for an eval. Bleeding: No amount of bleeding is normal and should be checked out properly. Excess fiber can give you dirrhea or constipation, depending on your fluid intake. Both can cause hemorrhoids to bleed, but that diagnosis should be left to the doctor to confirm or rule out other explanations for your bleeding. Do not self diagnose rectal bleeding! ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

My 2 weeks son weight is same as discharged weight (2.7 kg) though he is wetting his diapers (4), stool 1-2 times per week. Should i be afraid?
Don't be afraid: On the average, a normal newborn should gain about an ounce a day. Was baby discharged at one day of age? Then he may have continued to lose weight for up to five days of age. At this rate your baby may not be behind. Are you nursing or bottle feeding? Is the baby content? Was the baby weighed on the same scale? There may be a discrepancy between scales? Follow, up, with your pediatrician. ...Read more
After trying to pass a stool with no relief I wiped and there was caramel colored discharge/mucus looking substance on the tissue. What could this be?
Mucus: This indeed was most likely mucus and because of associated straining there may have been a tiny amount of stool particles and blood products mixed in giving it that color. To avoid straining make sure that your diet contains adequate fluid and fiber. You can take a daily softener like colace (docusate sodium) and insert a glycerin rectal suppository if needed. See your MD if problems recur. ...Read more

Im a 32y/omale. I have had light red blood blotches in my stools since I was a child. A jellylike discharge also from time to time & inflamation?
Rectal exam: Blood in stool is a sequelae of a rectal problem, either bleeding hemmorhoids or a bleeding growth or rectal fissure. Either could cause bleeding with or without pain. I have had blood when wiping after a stool for years and it would last weeks at a time. Lately there has been itching and mucus discharge there too?
You need to be seen: It is very possible that this is all related to a hemorrhoid that is intermittently bleeding and now irritated. Anal fissures - sort of cracks in the skin in that area - can also cause these issues. But bleeding can rarely mean something more worrisome is going on. So please consider seeing someone in person to better create an action plan. Best of luck. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
