Exercise: You appear to be describing spinal arthritis (spondylosis). I would recommend that you see your pcp for an evaluation to establish the correct diagnosis. If it is spondylosis, then exercises to increase your core and back muscle are essential. Use of an otc or prescription NSAID may also be beneficial. Every time I bend down to touch my toes or I'm getting up from sitting down on the couch or the chair I have a sharp pain in my lower back.

Herniated disc: While your symptoms are suggestive of herniated disc, you are a little young for such a degenerative process. It may just be a lower back muscle spasm due to excessive use. In either case, try Ibuprofen 400 mgs (2 ADVIL (ibuprofen) tabs) 2-3 times daily for a wk and a heating pad to local areafew times daily.
