OCD: OCD is obsessive compulsive disorder, which is comprised of obsessions (repeating unwanted thoughts) and compulsions (ritualistic behaviors to help deal with those thoughts) such as washing hands repeatedly, constantly cleaning, checking locks, and other similar behaviors. OCD: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is an anxiety disorder in which people have unwanted and repeated thoughts, feelings, ideas, sensations (obsessions), or behaviors that make them feel driven to do something (compulsions). Lots of good ideas: Go to the national ocd site. There are many highly effective treatments for ocd, some related to medications but many involving cognitive behavioral approaches. It is a highly treatable disorder, but it can be chronic and tends to wax and wane over time.See 1 more doctor answer
TX: Cognitive behavioral disorder can be very effective in the treatment of obsessive compulsive disorder. Psychotropic medications may also be indicated.
Dopamine, OCD Sympto: I feel your distress about OCD symptoms. A 2004 study in the "American Journal of Psychiatry" indicates a positive correlation between increased dopamine activity and people with OCD. The University of Utah notes that OCD is linked to increased levels of dopamine There is no conclusive research that dopamine increases OCD symptoms. See Psychiatrist for Diagnosis and treatment.
Guises of OCD: There are a number of common presentations of ocd as psychiatrist judith rapoport noted in her late '80's book "the boy who couldn't stop washing..." -1st book on ocd meant 4 general public. Common obsession themes: contamination; loss of control; harm 2 self/others; perfectionism; unwanted sexual thoughts; morality. Evaulation by a pro: Obsessive thought and compulsive behaviors that result in significant dysfunction is uncommon in it's full form at 5yrs, however people you go on to develop full blown OCD often report very early symptoms. Clearly an evaluation by a good chil;d psychiatrist would be important to determine appropriate treatment. There are many good behavioral and nutritionally based approaches for young children.See 2 more doctor answers
Mental Health: Ocd in kids is different in many ways from adults. It can be related to immune problems associated with strep infections or it can be familial or genetic. Usually there is gradual onset of symptoms between 9 and 10 years and many children will improve with time. This is less likely if there are other associated problems like anxiety or developmental disorders.
Possibly: Although the use of marijuana would be predicted to be capable of reducing anxiety in certain situations the converse should be considered including a consideration of the propensity of marijuana to increase paranoia in some suceptible people. With respect to alcohol, it would potentially in a temporary way reduce worrying but conversely may produce rebound anxiety when reducing alcohol intake.

I have been told that OCD is a chronic life-time condition. Is this true? Can erp only minimize symptoms and triggers but not eliminate them?
Ocd: Ocd can be a chronic disorder. It can decrease in intensity from disorder to "features" which are more likely to be personality traits that are more compulsive. Most people even with successful treatment have some residual anxieties.
If I have a lot of the symptoms of OCD and I already take medicine for anxiety does that mean I could have OCD and the medicine is just helping?
Professional Opinion: It can take years for someone diagnosed w/ ocd 2get appropriate treatment. So 1st get properly assessed. Then a) educate urself about what ocd is/isn't: & b) what form (s) ocd takes. (try http://bit. Ly/y0lvsh.) cognitive-behavioral therapy (cbt) that specifically includes exposure & response prevention (erp) has proven very effective as have certain medications. For some, erp/cbt + meds indicated.See 2 more doctor answers

Call/be with someone: Should be with someone u trust. And if u can't find someone to be with call them. If u don't want to talk to anyone u know, call the suicide crises hotline. They will talk u for hours and provide great support. Remember u ALWAYS have other choices.
Higher than you: Might guess. Here's a link: http://www. Ncbi. Nlm. Nih. Gov/pmc/articles/PMC2687723/ OCD is considered to be an anxiety disorder by most, although a smaller group of clinicians consider it to be a mood problem, too. To diagnose it, go to a psychologist, or here's another link: http://www. Psychologyproductsandservices. Com/page2.html
