Hard immovable painless occipital lymph node no bigger than 0.5 cm, noticed 5 weeks ago. Can this be cancerous?

Hard immovable painless occipital lymph node no bigger than 0.5 cm, noticed 5 weeks ago. Can this be cancerous?

Not really: 0.5 cm nodal lesion is about 1/4 inch. Most of the pathologic lymph nodes don't appear in the occipital region which drains the back of the scalp. They appear along the jugular chain usually not as a single small nodule. This could be lipoma, fibroma, neuroma. If it enlarges and is very firm, then a bx would be performed. Otherwise warm soaks to the area could resolve the problem. ...Read more

How can u tell if an occipital lymph node is swollen? What would it feel like? What would cause it to swell on just the left side?

Swollen Lymph Node: You can tell if a lymph node is swollen if you can feel the lymph node. Normal lymph nodes are generally not felt. If you can feel an occipital lymph node, it is enlarged. Anything that affects your upper airway, such as sinus inflammation or a recent scalp inflammation can cause a swollen occipital lymph node.

Unless you are sick, give it a couple weeks to resolve. If not, see your doctor. ...Read more

Two occipital lymph node's that are swollen on either side. The left one seems to have gotten smaller I think. They are both hard. I was just in contact with my grandpa who's sick. Please help. Thanks!

Should be ok: Lymph nodes typically enlarge when they are fighting infection. The nodes in your neck may have gotten larger bc of some recent cold or sore throat. This shouldn't have any impact on you spending time with your sick grandpa. Unfortunately, if he has something contagious (cold or flu) you could still get it. If your lymph nodes get larger and stay that way (few weeks), you should see your doctor. ...Read more

Hard painful knot (in occipital lymph node area?) just randomly appeared last night. Woke up with the pain and found the knot. No injury

Watch the node: Carefully over the next 2-3 days. Sometimes infection will declare itself only after a few days. If it persists in size beyond a month or 6 weeks, I would have it looked at by a surgeon to make sure it doesn't mean lymphoma. Thanks for trusting in HealthTap. ...Read more

14 year old son with swollen occipital lymph node left side, no pain or other issues, should I be worried?

Needs exam: This could easily be a reactive lymph node to a skin infection on the scalp. These are common. BUT, in order to say it's that, your son needs a good history and physical exam to check out other places lymph nodes can get enlarged. Don't worry, because that's not a good use of your time. BUT get him in for an exam so that we can get an accurate diagnosis of this mass. ...Read more

I've had the occipital lymph node on right side swollen since I was 18. 25 now. Doesn't hurt to touch. Also folliculitis that won't heal completely?

Two issues: The lymph node may be due to folliculitis if the affected area is in the vicinity of the node. It is not feasible to provide a meaningful opinion about folliculitis without examining you. It would be prudent to see your primary care doctor or a dermatologist.

1" hard movable mass, no pain in occipital lymph node in my 9yr old boy, he sadi its been there a few weeks and itches sometimes.. .. any concerns?

See Your Doctor Now: This mass may or may not be a prominent lymph node which is a component of the immune system. Infection, trauma, cancer can cause them to enlarge with or without pain. However itching is not a typical feature and benign nodes are usually soft. A non-lymphoid mass must also be considered. Visual inspection is required. See your doctor now for the correct diagnosis and treatment. ...Read more

Irritants/ bites: Solo enlarged nodes are usually reflective of a local process. Irritation of the scalp, a local bug bite, etc. Nodes usually run a 3-4 week cycle of enlrging when stimulated, processing their irritant and returning to resting size. Hi doctor I have an olive size occipital lymph node and it is very painful also I have lots of acne in my scalp and it is itchy, what it could be?

Reactive node: The lymph node is almost certainly a reactive lymph node in response to your scalp condition. The occipital nodes drain the scalp region- if you have a chronic condition of your scalp, it is good/healthy/normal for those nodes to enlarge. More important is to get your scalp condition under control. It's unusual for scalp to have that much acne, so suggest dermatology visit ASAP to correctly treat! ...Read more
