I have all the symptoms of lung cancer: shortness of breath, cough with yellow phlegm and occasional red streaks, fingernail clubbing...but my Chest X-Ray and Noncontrast High-Res Chest CT were negative. Doctors are saying I'm fine, but I'm scared?

Trust your physician: or obtain a pulmonary medical consultation as a second opinion. Without symptoms such as weight loss. anorexia, expectorating pure blood. chronic spasmodic coughing,etc. this is not consistent with lung cancer, especially with a negative CT scan. I suggest behavioral counseling with a certified psychotherpist for CBT. ...Read more

Sinus/throat/lung/gi: Phlegm in the throat can come from infection in the sinus, throat, lung (bronchitis or pneumonia) and gerd. Each of these conditions can usually be identified and treated sometimes in combination. Sinusitis with antibiotics/decongestants, bronchitis /pneumonia with step wise asthma treatment/antibioitcs and gerd with antacid diet GI medications. ...Read more

Most common: cause is ALLERGY! If there is no inflammation from infection (yellowish/green sputum) then you most likely have an allergic tracheobronchitis ( a "relative" of asthma) An anti-histamine containing expectorant might help (eg: Phenergan (promethazine) Excpectorant) Check with your PCP (Primary Care Provider) Hope this helps Dr Z ...Read more

Viral cough: This sounds like a typical viral cough. Symptoms can persist for up to 6-8 weeks. If you develop fevers, shortness of breath or chest pain accompanied by the cough then you need to visit your Doctor. At this stage it is highly unlikely that you need antibiotics. ...Read more

Bronchitis?: This may be bronchitis, but since it has lasted so long you need to be checked to see if you have something more serious, like pneumonia or tuberculosis. See a doctor about this. Good luck! ...Read more

I was diagnosed with strep 4 days ago and began taking penicillin. Today when i woke up i was coughing up bloody phlegm--- is this a usual symptom?
