Ultrasound is performed if needed or scheduled at 12-14 wks to check nuchal thickness. Rarely is a pelvic exam done on first visit unless you have symptoms of infection or miscarriage. Be VERY careful: Most of the outfits offering "heavy metal testing" are scams, charging outrageous prices for"tests" intended to get you to buy their nutritional supplements, have your fillings removed, and generally suck you into a expensive racket. They exude warmth and this is the one thing that may make you feel better. ...Read more

Hi my gestational age is 7 wks and my obstetric scan is over the result is embryonic cardiac activity present but IRREGULARITY NOTED WITH BRADYCARDIA ?

Hi my gestational age is 7 wks and my obstetric scan is over the result is embryonic cardiac activity present but IRREGULARITY NOTED WITH BRADYCARDIA ?

Too early to worry: At such an early gestational age, it is difficult to assess the significance of heart rate and its predictive value as to the outcome of this pregnancy. The best solution would be to reassess by ultrasound in 1-2 weeks, as there is little to nothing that can be done to change whatever might occur with this pregnancy. ...Read more

What does it mean when my Dr. Writes on my obstetric history I am a G5 P0002?

What does it mean when my Dr. Writes on my obstetric history I am a G5 P0002?

Looks odd. Hmmm....: It could mean you're having trouble reading the doctor's writing, or the doctor is waiting for help from you in order to convert some or all of the 3 zeros into other numbers. Usually, the G5 means a woman has gotten pregnant "5" times. The 3 zeros really should be 3 numbers that add up to "5" = number of term pregnancies + preemie pregnancies + aborted pregnancies. The 2 means 2 living children. ...Read more

Why is informed consent overlooked when it comes to resident obstetric treatment?

Why is informed consent overlooked when it comes to resident obstetric treatment?

It shouldn't: All procedures should go through an informed consent process regardless of who is doing the procedure. You do not need to give consent to be seen by a resident. It is your choice to go to a teaching hospital. If you don't want that, don't go there. A resident is a licensed doctor who is undergoing specialty training. ...Read more

What are the differences between a gynecologist (not obstetric) and obstetric gynecologist?

What are the differences between a gynecologist (not obstetric) and obstetric gynecologist?

No OB: A gynecologist does not do obstetrics. Many OB/GYNs will give up the OB as they get older, not wanting the crazy hours most OB/GYNs have. (I often tell my patients when they have been waiting in the office because I've been delivering a baby that the babies have no respect for my schedule). Both have trained the same and are certified by the same board (ABOG). ...Read more

What have been the biggest improvements in child birth and obstetrics in the past 10 years?

Elective deliveries: I am sure it would depend on who you ask but in my mind one of the greatest improvements in child birth in the last 10 years are guidelines from the american academy of obsetrics and gynecology that call for an end to elective csections and inductions before 39 weeks. When followed this guideline has led to a huge drop in nicu admissions for near term babies with respiratory distresss. ...Read more

At week four..urine and trance virginal scan was positive but now at week 11 and 3 days, obstetric scan says no baby or sac. what could be wrong?

Miscarriage a possib: At 11 weeks there should be no question about being pregnant. If they say there was nothing to see, then it is possible that you had a miscarriage along the way . They could test your blood to see if your dates are off and maybe not 11 weeks. Best to talk to your doctor to get the whole story. ...Read more
