Separation of these muscles, diastasis, is common w/premature infants & following increased abdominal girth (pregnancy, obesity). Depends on kind of: exercises that you do. Repeated crunches and heavy lifting are likely to increase the diastasis, but core training like push ups and planks and overall cardio conditioning should be helpful.
