Is gluten free pasta ( maize starch, soy flour, potato starch and rice starch)with about 40 gm carbohydrates good for cholesterol ?

Is gluten free pasta ( maize starch, soy flour, potato starch and rice starch)with about 40 gm carbohydrates good for cholesterol ?

Does not matter: Since 90% of the cholesterol is produced by the body regardless of your diet, the above would not noticeably affect your cholesterol level. Do note that too much carb may not be good for your health. I don't believe extreme diet does anyone any good. Just eat anything in moderation and exercise at least 3 hrs a week will likely keep you in better shape. ...Read more

Difference between fiber in your diet and supplement fiber? Isn't fiber, fiber?

Difference between fiber in your diet and supplement fiber? Isn't fiber, fiber?

Yes ; no: Yes, fiber is fiber. But no, there's also soluble vs non-soluble fiber. More importantly, try to focus on eating enough of the right foods to get 25-36g/d as opposed to eating poorly ; then attempting to supplement w/fiber pills/mixes. Besides which, food tastes much better than pills ; powder. And eating enough fiber daily w/plenty of fluids ; physical activity will regulate bowel function. ...Read more

There is soluble: Fiber and there is insoluble fiber. Insoluble fiber is more likely to be roughage in the diet. Are low carb diets healthier than diets with whole grains, vegetables, fruit and lean proteins?

Are low carb diets healthier than diets with whole grains, vegetables, fruit and lean proteins?

Not necessarily: There is no single diet that is best for everyone. I believe it is wise to minimize sugars and simple starches, but i believe a diet with whole grains, vegetables, fruit and low-fat proteins is healthier than a strict low carb diet (which is relatively high in fat and protein). See http://drrandybaker.Com/2013/01/20/diet-and-health/ for my essay on the pros and cons of various diets. ...Read more

Ingredients: potato powder, potato starch, modified food starch, vegetable oil. Is it healthy?

REALLY UNHEALTHY!!!: This is recipe for disaster. Potatoes are in the environmental working group's dirty dozen foods-they're high in pesticides if not organic & are readily converted to sugar so raise blood sugar, causing weight gain & increased risk of diabetes. Generic "vegetable oil" is almost certainly corn, soy or canola which are all gmo if not organic & very toxic, fried potatoes have carcinogenic acrylamides. ...Read more

I eat daily lot good healthy food: raw almond, seed, Walnut, Pecan Pistachio, Brazil nut, & olive oil. This adds up to 15+grams sat fat. Any Concerns?

NO unless...: While it's long been recommended that people minimize saturated fat, recent research suggests there's no benefit to limiting saturated fat (especially when it comes from the healthy foods you are eating) unless you have Familial Hypercholesterolemia or ApoE4. See http://authoritynutrition.com/saturated-fat-good-or-bad/ for a very well-written discussion of saturated fat and the current science. ...Read more

What's the benefit of consuming complex carbohydrates (grains mostly) over simple carbohydrates (fruits, veggies)?

What's the benefit of consuming complex carbohydrates (grains mostly) over simple carbohydrates (fruits, veggies)?

You got it backwards: Fruits and veggies are NOT simple carbohydrates! Simple carbohydrates are sugars and foods that easily break down into sugars, such as white flour, white rice, potatoes and juices. These readily raise our blood sugar, which is unhealthy.Complex carbohydrates are found in whole grains, most vegetables and fruits and generally contain fiber. These raise blood sugar less. See http://tinyurl.com/y8f4cagu ...Read more

Is fruit and veg whole healthier than smoothies (liquidised)?

Is fruit and veg whole healthier than smoothies (liquidised)?

Yes: Because with whole fruits and veggies, you get the fiber which results in less consumption and quicker satiety (fullness). Smoothies have more sugar from the fruits and veggies due to more being used to make the smoothie. Plus, most smoothies have added ingredients like sugars, syrups, powders, etc - unless you make it yourself. ...Read more
