In addition to: Dr. Kass' excellent answer, i'll add that if you have some sort of bony protrusion that happens to be right over the nerve that supplies your little piggy, the nerve can get sandwiched between the bony protrusion and your shoe causing something called neuropraxia which can cause you to feel numb.
