I have pain stemming from the back of my left leg (calf) down to the ankle and numbness like pins and needles in my toes on the left foot.?

Nerves=numbness: First consider if there is any swelling present. When someone presents with calf pain, it is important to be aware of the risks of blood clots in this area. This would most likely present with swelling of the leg. Many times people feel numbness in their foot in such a scenario. Such pain could also be due to injury to the Triceps Surae. If swollen, I send my patients for a doppler study. ...Read more

Be seen: It is really hard to say without the benefit if an exam and things, there are multiple causes from benign to more serious. June left foot numb then calf, knee thigh and 2 months arm did mri xray, bugling disc on right side pain getting worse and numbness spreading why?

Cervical disc: Not unusual for patients in their 50-60s to have wear of their discs in both neck and low back which as they wear produces narrowing of the bony tunnels leading away from the spinal cord., When this occurs the nerves in both the neck and low back become pinched, This can lead to pain, numbness and tingling, weakness So this is not a case of spreading, Rather it's a process occurring simultaneo ...Read more

Too much: In all those anatomic distributions, I don't believe there is any one single diagnosis that can be invoked as an explanation. I'm afraid you have numerous areas of rheumatism and arthritis - I don't think your mild scoliosis is a factor here. ...Read more

I was kneeling for over an hour and my legs kept going numb. It's been over 24 hours and my left calf and foot is still partially numb. Suggestions?

I was kneeling for over an hour and my legs kept going numb. It's been over 24 hours and my left calf and foot is still partially numb. Suggestions?

Neurapraxia: Neurapraxia is the mildest form of crush injury to a nerve, where the axon and myelin sheath are still intact. The transient reduction of blood flow from repeated crush injury (i.e. Kneeling for over an hour) leads to loss of sensory +/- motor function, which may take up to 8 weeks to completely recover, but happens earlier in most cases. The sensation will come back, give it time to heal. ...Read more

I have numbness by the side of my left foot, almost to the ankle. Irritating, sometimes I don't sleep due to changing position of the leg.

Lumbar spine: Consider l-5 disc protrusion or spinal stenosis. This is also the distribution of the sural nerve - check to see if you have an irregularity in the shape of the ankle area (lump?) that could represent something impinging on this nerve or if this numb feeling changes with movement of your foot/ankle versus movement of your spine/sleep position. Does it stop when you sleep in fetal position? ...Read more

Male 64. From 2 weeks I have pain and numbness of the left leg from the knee down, but not feet. When I I touch my knee I have pain from knee to toes?

Numbness and Pain: I am assuming that you have no knee injury. Pain and numbness like this is typically a nerve irritation coming from your knee, hip or low back. I hve buzzing in my foot, calf pain and my middle three toes are numb on left side. Any ideas?

I hve buzzing in my foot, calf pain and my middle three toes are numb on left side. Any ideas?

Sounds like nerve: Most likely condition would be a pinched nerve. The nerves that supply the feet stem from nerve branches traveling from the leg. The "pinch" could be from the back at its root, but it an also be locally due to musculature. Another thing to be checked is circulation because if blood flow is hampered to a an area, it can cause pain and reduce function in the nerves. Get checked properly. ...Read more

My bf has raised veins on his entire left leg and left foot numbness, he is 30years old and has smoked for 20+ years. What could it be?

Tobacco and kids: I get concerned about parental influence when I hear about young kids getting ahold of cigarettes. The body is not built to withstand abuse from smoking at any age, but effects on growing children are even more worrisome. Long-time smokers can develop many leg problems, including vein thrombosis (clot), neuropathy or "poor circulation". It is best to see a physician asap for diagnosis, treatment. ...Read more

I have severe numbness on top of my left foot and numbness on the side of my left leg. My MRI says disc bulge abuts the defending nerve roots.

Response: Not sure of your question, but you describe numbness anatomically in a left L-5 distribution, and might expect your MRI to demonstrate compression of left L-5 nerve root. Alternative anatomy might be c/w peroneal compression at lateral knee. An EMG can sort out these questions, and assess severity of nerve compression to guide treatment decisions. ...Read more
