Sciatica: Pain in the distribution as you suggested describes the pattern of the nerve that travels in the leg called the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve is not the cause of the pain source, it is the result of an irritated nerve typically in the lumbar spine (low back) which are caused by herniated disks, spinal stenosis or degenerative disc disease requiring further evaluation by a spine specialist. ...Read more

Nerves=numbness: First consider if there is any swelling present. When someone presents with calf pain, it is important to be aware of the risks of blood clots in this area. This would most likely present with swelling of the leg. Many times people feel numbness in their foot in such a scenario. Such pain could also be due to injury to the Triceps Surae. If swollen, I send my patients for a doppler study. ...Read more

Tarsal tunnel : Description sounds somewhat like tarsal tunnel syndrome which is an entrapped nerve in the ankle but could also be referred lumbar radiculopathy (pinched nerve in back) or just really bad tendinitis compressing the nerves of the lower leg. Sounds like an exam and some nerve conduction velocities would be helpful. ...Read more

I was kneeling for over an hour and my legs kept going numb. It's been over 24 hours and my left calf and foot is still partially numb. Suggestions?

Neurapraxia: Neurapraxia is the mildest form of crush injury to a nerve, where the axon and myelin sheath are still intact. The transient reduction of blood flow from repeated crush injury (i.e. Kneeling for over an hour) leads to loss of sensory +/- motor function, which may take up to 8 weeks to completely recover, but happens earlier in most cases. The sensation will come back, give it time to heal. ...Read more

Numbness : Numbness that shoots from the big toe up the lower limb and triggered by movement of the toe sounds like neuritis. Neuritis is caused by irritation or injury to a nerve. In this case, the involved nerve could be one of the digital (that's digit as in toes) nerves to the big toe, the medial plantar nerve, or the posterior tibial nerve. Since feet take such a beating, from things including the activities we do and the things we wear on our feet, it is not surprising that the nerves in our feet can be injured. Digital nerves can sometimes become swollen, causing something called morton's neuroma. The medial plantar nerve can be hurt by badly-fitting arch supports. The posterior tibial nerve can get pinched at the ankle, something called tarsal tunnel syndrome. Foot nerves can also be made more liable to injury by other conditions, like diabetes and vascular disease. Podiatrists, who specialize in diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the feet, may be a good resource for foot nerve injuries. ...Read more

My latest back episode is lasting 8 weeks now and i experience tingling in my left foot and numbness down my leg. What should I do?

See Doc: Symptoms that have gone on for this long should be investigated. Advanced imaging like MRI or ct may be indicated if pt and bt didn't help, more aggressive therapy like trigger point injections, or various spinal injections or more conservatively osteopathic manipulation or chiropractic might help. ...Read more

Vibration Feeling: This is just a description of the sensation and could be from a circulation problem or a nerve problem. It could also be from nothing none and many patients have this without any underlying condition. Have a good neurological exam from your gp or from a neurologist. ...Read more
