Nerves=numbness: First consider if there is any swelling present. When someone presents with calf pain, it is important to be aware of the risks of blood clots in this area. This would most likely present with swelling of the leg. Many times people feel numbness in their foot in such a scenario. Such pain could also be due to injury to the Triceps Surae. If swollen, I send my patients for a doppler study. ...Read more

I was kneeling for over an hour and my legs kept going numb. It's been over 24 hours and my left calf and foot is still partially numb. Suggestions?

Neurapraxia: Neurapraxia is the mildest form of crush injury to a nerve, where the axon and myelin sheath are still intact. The transient reduction of blood flow from repeated crush injury (i.e. Kneeling for over an hour) leads to loss of sensory +/- motor function, which may take up to 8 weeks to completely recover, but happens earlier in most cases. The sensation will come back, give it time to heal. ...Read more

Numbness : Numbness that shoots from the big toe up the lower limb and triggered by movement of the toe sounds like neuritis. Neuritis is caused by irritation or injury to a nerve. In this case, the involved nerve could be one of the digital (that's digit as in toes) nerves to the big toe, the medial plantar nerve, or the posterior tibial nerve. Since feet take such a beating, from things including the activities we do and the things we wear on our feet, it is not surprising that the nerves in our feet can be injured. Digital nerves can sometimes become swollen, causing something called morton's neuroma. The medial plantar nerve can be hurt by badly-fitting arch supports. The posterior tibial nerve can get pinched at the ankle, something called tarsal tunnel syndrome. Foot nerves can also be made more liable to injury by other conditions, like diabetes and vascular disease. Podiatrists, who specialize in diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the feet, may be a good resource for foot nerve injuries. ...Read more
