I have numbness in both of my hands every morning and I also have to sleep with my arms straight because the joints in my elbows will start to hurt?

Pinched nerve: If the numbness is in the first 3 fingers the problem is most likely carpal tunnel syndrome. This is a problem in which the median nerve gets pinched at the wrist. It often occurs during sleep, driving a car, typing, or talking on the phone. If the numbness is in the 4th and 5th fingers it is likely from the ulnar nerve being punched at the elbow.. ...Read more

Hand : Hand numbness that appears in sleep and with repetitive movements is commonly a symptom of carpal tunnel syndrome, a condition in which one of the 3 major nerves to the hand gets compressed in the wrist. This causes numbness in the thumb, index, and middle finger, and sometimes in part or all of the ring finger, but usually not the pinkie. Discomfort from carpal tunnel syndrome can be felt elsewhere in the upper limb, but if there is true numbness anywhere in the forearm or arm, this can indicate a different problem, such as damage to the nerve roots or plexuses (big nerve interchanges) in the neck and shoulder. There are two other major nerves that go down into the hands, the radial nerve and the ulnar nerve, that could also be involved depending on the pattern of the problem it is a good idea to get hand problems checked by a primary care doctor, who can then refer to a neurologist if needed. Left undiagnosed and untreated, problems like hand numbness can become worse, or develop into weakness of the hands. More information on carpal tunnel syndrome and similar diagnoses can be found at: http://www.Mayoclinic.Com/health/carpal-tunnel-syndrome/ds00326. ...Read more

It should return: Often when sleeping or keeping a limb in a certain position for a prolonged period of time either circulation is reduced or nerve compression occurs and this will cause of loss of function. Most of the time sensation and movement return within 1-3 minutes once the person awakens or moves the limb. Sometimes it takes longer. You should see a neurologist if no improvement for much longer. ...Read more

Which MRI for recurrent Right Arm numbness 30s after supine-sleep on mornings? Daily numbness in ulnar and hand. Previous brachial plexus trauma.

Varies: If the numbness is coming from the spine, then certainly an MRI of the cervical spine would be the test of choice. Other potential causes could include problems in the area of the brachial plexus, especially with your history, or in the lower arm such as cubital tunnel syndrome. A nerve conduction test can be very helpful to tell where the problem is coming from. ...Read more
