Prednisone is a synthetic cortisone. The body makes cortisone, a natural hormone made in adrenal glands. The body converts it to Hydrocortisone to become active. 25 mg of cortisone has about same effect as 5 mgm prednisone. The average person would produce 3-6 mg of pred daily. So why use a substitute? The synthetic has more anti-inflammatory effect; but has less effect ...Read more

Neuropathy: Nerve damage (neuropathy) is a common diagnosis for such complaints, though there are other potential diagnoses that can cause this. A nerve conduction and EMG test can be useful to prove neuropathy. Neuropathy has many potential causes, but diabetes, thyroid issues, some toxins (alcohol, chemo meds), vitamin deficiencies, and some infections (eg hiv, hansen's disease) are coin causes. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers

See below: Guess I am confused, as to why you would have your symptoms tested by evoked potential study which is basically worthless if you have a peripheral nerve problem. (although may help diagnose a spinal cord problem). The more appropriate test could be an EMG nerve conduction study. I think you need to sit down with your doctor and ask some direct questions. Sorry, but that's my thinking, so far. ...Read more
What are the symptoms of having a herniated disk in the lower back? I have numbness and tingling in the lower back when sitting?
Many symptoms...: While this could be a sign of a herniated disc, it sounds a little more like facet arthritis as it does not radiate to different areas and does not have a constant dull ache. That being said, a physical exam and imaging would be necessary to be sure. If you are concerned about an actual herniation, then I would recommend seeing a physician for an exam to be safe. ...Read more

Could be normal: You might have just compressed your sciatic nerve - the main nerve from your spine that extends all the way to the toes. Sometimes you can sit on this nerve "wrong" and cause compression and a transient tingling and numbness. If this only happens with certain seated positions, then I wouldn't worry. If you have random tingling, numbness, pain, or esp weakness, then go see a Primary Care doc. ...Read more
