Carpal tunnel?: Your hand numbness might be carpal tunnel syndrome. Use of a wrist/hand brace at night when you sleep may help. Maybe carpal tunnel: Carpal tunnel syndrome is a result of the nerve being compressed as it travels through the wrist area--see pic. The symptoms often involves the thmb and index+middle finger and usually worse at night/am. Being a diabetic does increase risk of getting carpal tunnel syndrome, but i would not say that your symptom/trouble is from diabetes. I suggest consulting doc for accurate diagnosis. Which part?: The most common reason for this would be carpal tunnel in which case your 1st 3 or 4 fingers would go numb. Try a carpal tunnel splint at night for a while. It is possible you might need an injection in your wrist. See a pmr doctor or orthopedic surgeon. ...Read more

See physician: There are a few considerations here that range in severity. Typically the "pins & needles" you get from "sleeping on it wrong" doesn't last all day. Carpal tunnel and similar syndromes are a consideration, as are more centrally located nerve problems. Would also have to consider a stroke/tia (mini-stroke).
