Also known: Porcine thyroid because its a desiccated thyroid hormone from pigs. In the market safely use for 100 years. Synthetic thyroid came in the 50's and replace it. Still use by some physicians. Depending on the dose you should check your thyroid levels (tsh) after 8 weeks. And if changes made another 8 weeks. That's the way with synthetic thyroid. Can't find any difference with armour thyroid. Read more

Complicated question: It would not hurt to stop it for 1-2 days and then resume at the normal dose. However, it is unclear what is meant by "overdose", and it is unclear why you are taking armour thyroid, rather than the preferable medication, levothyroxine. Read more

Hypothyroidism: Whether you forget or run out of your Armour thyroid or branded/generic levothyroxine, you'll eventually return to your previous hypothyroid state w/its attendant symptoms. Of course, if you're not convinced that you needed it in first place, it's best to discuss w/prescribing physician. It depends: It takes weeks to months to improve symptoms related to hypothyroidism, but it also depends on how low your thyroid level was before starting treatment, and what symptoms are related to the thyroid as opposed to other reasons. I have seen many people with marginally abnormal TSH levels, who did not note improvement in symptoms despite normalizing their levels with thyroid hormone. Read more

Once daily: Be consistent re: dose time, generally 1/2 hr before or 2 hr after a meal (empty stomach), avoid taking with high dose vit/min supplement. Check levels in about 3 weeks. Watch for increased sweats, weight loss, shortness of breath, nervousness, palpitations, insomnia, frequentbm, hair thinning, tremor, "heebie-jeebies"- symptoms of xs levels of thyroid hormone (native or store-bought).
