Endometrial Ablation (Definition)

Endometrial ablation refers to procedures that use energy to damage or destroy the lining of the uterus that normally build up in preparation of pregnancy. If no pregnancy happens, the lining is shed as a period. There are several different types of ablation-thermal heat, radio frequency, and freezing. All of them are good options but some might be better in certain situations. ...Read more

What are the odds of endometrium regenerating after the Novasure procedure? I haven't had a cycle in 13 months.

What are the odds of endometrium regenerating after the Novasure procedure? I haven't had a cycle in 13 months.

Little chance: There is little chance of the endometrium regenerating. If you start to develop bleeding, it is more likely there may be a polyp developing in an island of endometrium that may be there already. ...Read more

I had the novasure procedure 4 days ago. During this procedure it was done twice n my lining didnt want to shed what would cause this?

Not sure: The novasure procedure generally works well. I have never encountered anything that would make me need to do it twice. You probably should discuss this with your gynecologist as maybe the first time the machine did not do the procedure. ...Read more

I had the novasure procedure several years ago, why am i bleeding after sex now?

I had the novasure procedure several years ago, why am i bleeding after sex now?

This is not uncommon: It is not uncommon to have some bleeding after an endometrial ablation. In some cases regular periods may return after several months or years. It is more common to have light bleeding. Cramping after sex may release retained blood from your uterus. You should discuss this with your doctor at a future visit. ...Read more

Which procedure would be best for a endometrail ablation thermal or novasure?

Either one: There really is no good answer to that question. The procedures are equally effective for most women. If your uterus is larger then 8-9 cm, your physician may choose thermal ablation which may be better for larger uterine cavities. If your procedure is done in the office, my experience has been that novasure is somewhat better tolerated and certainly quicker for the patient. ...Read more

Had novasure procedure, still spotting 7 weeks later, just passed a "chunk" of something flesh colored, with a burnt smell. What is this ?

Had novasure procedure, still spotting 7 weeks later, just passed a "chunk" of something flesh colored, with a burnt smell. What is this ?

This is not uncommon: The tissue you described is the residual tissue burned during the ablation. I've heard it described by novasure patients like that. It's also not uncommon to have some bleeding after an endometrial ablation. Sometimes regular periods may return after several weeks to years. It is more common to have light bleeding. You should discuss this with your doctor at a future visit. It is not urgent. ...Read more

How is it possible to have a child after a tubal ligation and a Novasure procedure? I am remarried and we would love to have a baby together.

How is it possible to have a child after a tubal ligation and a Novasure procedure? I am remarried and we would love to have a baby together.

IVF: On rare occassions, tubals can be reversed. Much higher success with IVF (in vitro fertilization), where eggs are retrieved from mom and then fertilized in the lab with dad's sperm and then implanted into the uterus. This bypasses the tubes so it doesn't matter if you've had a tubal. You need to sit down and have a nice consultation with a fertility specialist/clinic in your area. ...Read more

I had a hysteroscopy, d&c, and the novasure procedure done on 9-4-12. I am still spotting a month later, is this normal? If so, when will it go away?

Its common: Not all patients will completely stop bleeding after an ablation. It may take a few months before you know what your menses will be like. You should talk to you md about your particular problem. ...Read more

If perforated on a novasure ablation, must that procedure stop? Can you do a therma choice instead while in process or nothing at all until healed up?

Stop procedure: Stopping the procedure is indicated with any endometrial ablation procedure when there a uterine perforation is suspected. You would want to give the uterus time to heal before attempting another procedure (4-6 weeks). ...Read more

If novasure did not fit evenly into a womb would the procedure still go ahead and if so wouldnt it be dangerous to ablate one side more than the other?

Not dangerous: Danger isnt the issue with an incomplete ablation. The issue is you may continue to have menstrual bleeding. The procedure will go ahead an ablate even if there is an uneven fit. That is ok. There are safety features in place to prevent activation if there is a hole in the uterus though. Novasure is not my favorite method for ablations but there is not a safety issue if one side was ablated better. ...Read more

I had novasure procedure in november. I started bleeding after intercourse last night and have already had my cycle this month. Should i be worried?

Ablation and bleed: Novasure has a 86% complete amenorrhea rate and most stop after the bleeding noted 6-8 weeks after surgery. However, some patients do take longer to stop completely. In addition, cervical inflammation from infection can cause post sex bleeding and is unrelated to your surgery. Have your surgeon do a quick evaluation in the office to see the source. ...Read more

Is there a danger of 'over ablating' with novasure procedure. I have long term burning on the right side of vulva and anus after this procedure, why?

Is there a danger of 'over ablating' with novasure procedure. I have long term burning on the right side of vulva and anus after this procedure, why?

No: The novasure device has a fail-safe mechanism to prevent over cauterization. Burning externally is usually not related to an ablation. I would make an appointment and be evaluated to see if you have an infection or a tear. ...Read more
