Probably won't help: The studies done on how much kids cough who take cough meds vs those who don't very clearly show that cough meds really don't make much difference. Many actually contain a med to suppress cough and a med to make you have a more productive cough within the same medicine! better to use humidity, push fluids. Can use something to dry up nose a little if severe congestion or use a neti pot. ...Read more
No cough syrup: There have been a number of studies showing that children's cough and cold medicines do not help and in some cases, children experience unpleasant side effects. It can be frustrating to deal with a cough, especially at night. Saline nasal spray, humidified air, or sleeping with the head somewhat propped up using extra pillows works for some. ...Read more
Rarely used in US: The recommended dose is .05mg/kg every 8 hours to start and yo to .15 mg/kg every 8 hours. This is rarely used in the us where standard asthma therapy includes inhaled steroids as maintenance with beta agonist inhalers for acute events. Some physicians would use this as a cough med for kids with mild infectious bronchospasm. ...Read more
Codeine: I think the best cough syrup for a nine year old whose cough is a post nasal drip and interfering with sleep, both the nine year olds and his parents, is something like Robitussin with Codeine which is available as a generic and though it does not taste very good is usually very effective. I would start with a teaspoon of honey first for milder cases before the codeine. ...Read more

Medication: Usually the answer is yes. For example standard liquid Diphenhydramine (benadryl) as 12.5mg in every 5ml of liquid. Mistakenly given 4cc dose of acefyl syrup twice in a span of one hour to my 4 n half year kid. wht should i do now?
No: There's been a lot of hype. The truth is, hfcs is 55% fructose and 45%glucose. Sucrose (table sugar) is about 50%fructose and 50%glucose. Glucose is used by our bodies as is. Fructose, on the other hand, requires processing by the liver to be used by the body. I recommend avoiding foods that contain a lot of either one. You get plenty of sugar in natural foods;you really don't need either one. ...Read more

Colic: Colic occurs in infants up to about 4 months of age. The ingredients in Colicaid will not hurt your baby but have not been shown to help much either. If your baby is taking a steroid such as Omnacortil Forte (prednisolone), that illness takes precedence and I would avoid giving baby other treatments unless prescribed. Unsure if safe. ...Read more
