Hair Loss (Definition)

Hair loss, otherwise known as alopecia, can be caused by different reasons, including damage to the hair shaft or follicles or fungal infections. There are two main types of alopecia. Alopecia areata occurs when the body's immune system attacks hair follicles and causes hair to fall out. Androgenetic (or androgenic) alopecia, on the other hand, is an inherited form of hair loss. With alopecia areata, hair can fall out in patches all over the body. With androgenetic alopecia, hair on the head first thins and then falls out. In men, this is called male pattern hair loss; in women, it is called ...Read more

I'm taking Norvasc (amlodipine) for my high blood pressure, it seems that I'm noticing a bit of hair loss, but no other side effects?

I'm taking Norvasc (amlodipine) for my high blood pressure, it seems that I'm noticing a bit of hair loss, but no other side effects?

Hair loss from meds: Some medications are known to cause hair loss. I would recommend being seen by a dermatologist who is expert in the hair loss and determin if the cause of your hair loss is due to Norvasc (amlodipine) you are taking or due to other causes.

Could be months: Your hair is not lost, just breaking off. It should grow out normally, but may take several months since hair grows intermittently not continuously. Give it time, and avoid chemical treatments. Continue the iron to build your blood count back toward normal.

I'm 31m begining to show first signs of hair loss s@ back of my scalp. Does rogain or minoxidil really workk?

I'm 31m begining to show first signs of hair loss s@ back of my scalp. Does rogain or minoxidil really workk?

Yes, they may: Although, they may work for you, i'd recommend to rule out other possible causes of hair loss such as thyroid disease and/or anemia. If there is none of those, and you exhibit male baldness pattern, you may try rogaine (minoxidil). I'd not go for Minoxidil (oral) as it does have a higher incidence of side effects.

I am on spironolactone 100 mg for androgenic hair loss, would maca root interfere witht spironolactone or decrease it`s antiandrogenic effect.?

I am on spironolactone 100 mg for androgenic hair loss, would maca root interfere witht spironolactone or decrease it`s antiandrogenic effect.?

Wouldn't help: It's not that it would interfere, it's that it wouldn't help! Also, you don't know what's in the product you take, since it's not checked or inspected. Further, all "supplements" can have adverse side effects. Don't get your medical education from tv or the internet.

What is good for hair loss?

What is good for hair loss?

Many causes: Men can have an inherited form of hair loss that is caused by male hormones. When older women stop having periods, they too can develop this male hormone type or hair loss. Both men and woman can have hair loss from thyroid disease, anemia, drugs like chemotherapy drugs, and stress and illness. There are treatments for many kinds of hair loss that a dermatologist can provide.

What causes female hair loss?

What causes female hair loss?

Plenty of factors: There are several reasons for female hair loss = hormonal, genetic, medications, environmental. Some of these can be evaluated by blood tests or looking through the meds you are taking or checking your family's hair histoty. The one that you can do something about is the environmental = your stress level, amount of rest you're getting, your hair products.

I have hair loss. What should I do?

I have hair loss. What should I do?

See a dermatologist: There are many different reasons for hair loss. A thorough history, including family history and physical, list of medications, supplements, etc. Is needed. You may need some bloodwork. With any type of hair loss, the earlier it is treated, the better the results. It is possible for a 21 year old male to lose hair in a male pattern distribution. All meds work better at keeping hair you have.

Is there any way of stopping hair loss in men?

Is there any way of stopping hair loss in men?

Hair loss: In the past few years, medicine has made tremendous strides in the treatment of men's hair loss. With the advent of 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors such as Propecia (finasteride) and the evolution of surgical hair restoration, for many, living with noticeable hair loss is no longer inevitable.
