Problems with vision for my 8 year old. Could she already have vision loss?

Problems with vision for my 8 year old. Could she already have vision loss?

Needs exam: She may be developing myopia (near sigh). She needs an eye exam then she may need glasses to correct her refractive error. Its common at her age that kids develop myopia that requires glasses.

Vision (Definition)

Vision is a feature of a person's brain that allows him to see. He must have normal eyes, optic nerves (that stretch from the eyes to the back of his brain), and visual cortex (the vision center in the brain), in order to see properly. An ophthalmologist is a ...Read more

My 8 year old son still pees himself during the day occasionally is this normal is he waiting to long is it normal at this age what can I do!?

See his pediatrician: For a physical exam ; 1st-voided am urine specimen (after he's had no food or liquids overnight). Document frequency, situation ; location when diurnal enuresis (daytime wetting) occurs, what other symptoms are present, how you respond to his wetting, ; whether he's ever been dry for 6 months. His doctor may order a spine x-ray or refer to a urologist before recommending behavioral therapy.

Normal temp for a 8 year old?

Normal temp for a 8 year old?

Depends on how taken: A normal temperature for an 8 year old is the same as an adult: 98.6 degrees, fahrenheit if taken orally. An axillary temperature (under the arm) tends to be 0.5 degrees lower, while a rectal temperature is 0.5 degrees higher and a tympanic (ear) temperature can be 0.5-1 degree higher. I find that tympanic thermometers are not as accurate, especially if the ear drum is hot from an ear infection.

Is it ever normal for a 7-8 year old to hit & punch self when upset or frustrated?

Is it ever normal for a 7-8 year old to hit & punch self when upset or frustrated?

Need alternative: It actually is not all that uncommon for kids this age to self-punish when upset. First, acknowledge with the child it is ok to feel upset/frustrated. We all have these emotions because we are human. But have it worked out ahead of time when they are feeling that way, what are appropriate ways to deal with those feelings. Some kids draw, punch a punching bag, tear up old newspapers or rags, etc.

Testicle down?: His scrotum should not be empty. Please have a doctor examine him to assure his testicle is where it should be, in the scrotal sac.

Is it normal for an 8 year old little girl to start menstruating?

Is it normal for an 8 year old little girl to start menstruating?

No: It means that the girl had to have started puberty by the time she was 5-6, most likely. Precocious puberty is defined when pubertal development begins prior to age 8 in girls. A menstruating female has been long into puberty. This requires a pediatric endocrine evaluation. Please discuss with your child's pediatrician. There could be something seriously wrong.

Almost every scratch my 8 year old gets becomes infected. Is there something we should investigate? My GP says it's a normal inflammatory response.

Almost every scratch my 8 year old gets becomes infected. Is there something we should investigate? My GP says it's a normal inflammatory response.

Points to consider: You can have a puss swab done to culture which bacteria if any is responsible for this. Often it is Staph aureus. Then treated with tested sensitive antibiotics. He might also be carrying the germ. Often fingernails and nose. Ask your doc about preventing carrier and treatment. Have his glucose and blood count checked.

Are adolescent nightmare convulsions at all normal? My 8 year old son seems to convulse in his sleep and wakes up in a cold sweat. He claims to be having nightmares. Is this an adolescent thing? Could it have long term health implications?

Cold sweats: Your child is to young to be called an adolescent. He maybe having nightmares which can be brought on by too much scary movies or television before bed, but then again he may be having seizures. Try changing his life style before end. If no improvement I would get him evaluated by a neurologist.

When people suffer from myopia, does that mean when they get older and get presbyopia, they get a normal vision? I can't wait!!! :)

When people suffer from myopia, does that mean when they get older and get presbyopia, they get a normal vision? I can't wait!!! :)

Depends: As you age there is natural decline of the ability to focus upclose (presbyopia). This occurs around 40. People who are myopic are aided by their natural near focus point and are less symptomatic as they pass 40. It also depends on how myopic you are. Eg., if you are -1, you will be able to focus comfortably at 1 m but more accommodative effort closer. But a -3 will be very comfortable at 30 cm.

My 8 year old son poop is not normal. It's always to big to flush what can be wrong. I don't even know how he gets it out. Help! ?

More information: Does he poop regularly? Does he go many days between poops? Does he have abdominal distension? Is his appetite affected? Sounds like he needs to see a pediatric gastroenterologist or pediatric surgeon.

Local Reaction: It is local reaction to the flu vaccine which can happen some time and gets better by itself. If it does not clear or if he gets any other symptoms or fever, than contact your pediatrician.

I worded my previous question wrong. My 8 year old has all signs and sypmtoms of liver problems except jaundice. Is this normal?

I worded my previous question wrong. My 8 year old has all signs and sypmtoms of liver problems except jaundice. Is this normal?

Varies with conditin: The liver can show an injury pattern specific to its cause that may not produce jaundice in its early or moderate stages. Various simple viruses like mumps or mono can produce liver enzyme elevations without jaundice. One of the most elevated sets of liver enzyme studies I ever saw was a 9mo with unrecognized hepatitis b he got from mom at birth. He was never became jaundiced.

Is it normal for 8 year old (almost 9) son to have pubic hair near his penis? It's not thick and coarse but fine and dark.

Is it normal for 8 year old (almost 9) son to have pubic hair near his penis? It's not thick and coarse but fine and dark.

Yes: The hair of the pubic area is often made darker long before puberty by the action of hormones of the adrenal glands. It is often long & silky in quality but darker than noted previously. The presence of coarse or thicker hair would suggest an abnormality.
