Normal temp for a 8 year old?

Normal temp for a 8 year old?

Depends on how taken: A normal temperature for an 8 year old is the same as an adult: 98.6 degrees, fahrenheit if taken orally. An axillary temperature (under the arm) tends to be 0.5 degrees lower, while a rectal temperature is 0.5 degrees higher and a tympanic (ear) temperature can be 0.5-1 degree higher. I find that tympanic thermometers are not as accurate, especially if the ear drum is hot from an ear infection. ...Read more

Is it ever normal for a 7-8 year old to hit & punch self when upset or frustrated?

Is it ever normal for a 7-8 year old to hit & punch self when upset or frustrated?

Need alternative: It actually is not all that uncommon for kids this age to self-punish when upset. First, acknowledge with the child it is ok to feel upset/frustrated. We all have these emotions because we are human. But have it worked out ahead of time when they are feeling that way, what are appropriate ways to deal with those feelings. Some kids draw, punch a punching bag, tear up old newspapers or rags, etc. ...Read more

Is it normal for an 8 year old little girl to start menstruating?

A menstruating female has been long into puberty. This requires a pediatric endocrine evaluation. Please discuss with your child's pediatrician. When people suffer from myopia, does that mean when they get older and get presbyopia, they get a normal vision? I can't wait!!! :)

When people suffer from myopia, does that mean when they get older and get presbyopia, they get a normal vision? I can't wait!!! :)

Depends: As you age there is natural decline of the ability to focus upclose (presbyopia). This occurs around 40. People who are myopic are aided by their natural near focus point and are less symptomatic as they pass 40. It also depends on how myopic you are. Eg., if you are -1, you will be able to focus comfortably at 1 m but more accommodative effort closer. But a -3 will be very comfortable at 30 cm. ...Read more

If a 7 alomst 8 year old boy touches a 4 almost 5 year old boys penis is it sexual abuse or normal kid stuff? Is the 7 old enough to know better?

If a 7 alomst 8 year old boy touches a 4 almost 5 year old boys penis is it sexual abuse or normal kid stuff? Is the 7 old enough to know better?

I call abusive: Such interaction between age equivalent kids is "exploration" & I can accept as much as 2 years age difference into that idea. Beyond that and specifically for the 7-8 yo who is old enough to know right from wrong on these issues it is abuse & often reveals a past abuse of the older kid. Size & intimidation is also an issue when the 60 lb 7-8 yo is doing this with a 40+lb 4-5 yo. ...Read more

My 8 yr old daughter has neck pain in one spot, approx. C4-c6 area for > 1 year. Xrays all show normal. Sometimes she gets headaches. What is this?

Peds neck pain: Persistent pain in kids is not very common. Especially if persisting for a year or more. Normal x-rays don't really rule much in or out, since developmentally the peds spine is filled with growing bone and cartilage. Inflammatory conditions like juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, lyme's, etc should be considered. Nice about jra is generally self limited but needs diagnosis to prevent eye problems. ...Read more
